Turkan Kumbaraci Gardenier Named a Lifetime Achiever by Marquis Who's Who

    MCLEAN, VA, August 30, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to name Turkan Kumbaraci Gardenier a Lifetime Achiever. An accomplished listee, Dr. Gardenier celebrates many years' experience in her professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes she has accrued in her field. Dr. Gardenier has been a research statistician for well over 50 years, serving the private sector and governmental entities in the mathematical management of risk. Together with her husband, fellow statistician John Stark Gardenier, her work informs everything from public health to the risk of vessel accidents and spills in the Aleutian Islands. Dr. Gardenier is the current director of research of Pragmatica Corporation and president of Pro-File Computer Institute.

Born in Istanbul to Celal and Aysel Kumbaraci in 1941, Dr. Gardenier traveled to the U.S. in 1958, having received a scholarship from Vassar College, and earned an AB in 1961 followed by an MA from Columbia University one year later. In 1966, she received a PhD from Columbia University and began work as an operations research scientist at the IIT Research Institute in Chicago. Between 1968 and 1970, she served as an assistant professor and chairman of industrial engineering with Middle East Technical University in Ankara, Turkey, and received a grant from the Central Treaty Organization to conduct research.

In 1970, Dr. Gardenier returned to the U.S. as a visiting scientist at Brookhaven National Laboratories. The varied applications of her work led to a position as associate director at Pfizer Pharmaceuticals, and in 1973, she accepted a position with the New York State Maritime College as an assistant professor. Dr. Kumbaraci married in 1977, and in 1978, she became a health scientist with the Environmental Protection Agency in Washington. In 1980, she received a grant from the National Science Foundation for meetings the Philippines. Dr. Gardenier went on to serve as a statistical expert for the U.S. Energy Information Administration while serving as an associate professor at American University in Washington and becoming president of Pragmatica Corporation, all in 1983. From 1997 to 2000, she received grants from the National Cancer Institute at the National Institutes of Health.

Dr. Gardenier's career in statistical research has brought her to many roles, such as organizer and publisher of Symposia on Data Efficiency, and work with the Gardenier Math/Statistics Series for Quantitative Literacy. She served at Equal Employment Opportunity as a statistical expert, and consulted with Engineering Computer Optecnomics. From 1974 to 1977, she served as a consultant with C.R. Cushing Co. Marine Engineering in New York, and from 1982 to 1990, she was a technical consultant for Analytic Corporation in Arlington, Virginia. As a statistician, she has been a member at the American Statistical Association, the Operations Research Society of America, Institute of Management Sciences (INFORMS), the Society of Computer Simulation, the Society of Risk Analysis, the Society of Industrial & Applied Mathematics, the Institute of Mathematic Statistics, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).

From 1981 to 1984, Dr. Gardenier became involved at the Foxcroft School in Middleburg, Virginia, as a parent representative. In other civic roles, she has been affiliated with the American Friends of Turkey, the World Mutual Service Committee, and the American Turkish Association. In acknowledgement of her work towards a mathematical understanding of risk assessment, Dr. Gardenier was selected for inclusion in numerous volumes of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, Who's Who in the World, Who's Who of American Women, and three volumes of Who's Who in Finance and Business from 2006 to 2010. She is also listed in the 1975 edition of American Men and Women in Science, the 1974 Directory of Biomedical Engineers, and the 1974 edition of Who's Who in Cancer. She was cited in 2000 Outstanding Scholars of the 21st Century and Great Women of the 21st Century.

Her work has been published by the Institute of Mathematical Statistics and Biometric Society, the International Journal of Applied Science and Technology, and Teka Trends. She also wrote and disseminated the GARDEN-EAR Mathematical-Statistical series for children, and 50 YEAR MOTIF: IDEA, ART, POEM. Last year she penned the multimedia-oriented Memories of Ages and Profiles in Transition, which incorporated poetry, art, photography, the use of acrylics and graphite.

She enjoys painting, swimming, photography, music composition, and multimedia training.
