Dr. Woody is a cyber security and data processing expert with over 46 years of computer science experience, currently serving with the CERT Division of the Software Engineering Institute at Carnegie Mellon University. The division studies and solves cybersecurity problems to resolve software vulnerability, drawing on Dr. Woody's myriad of programming experiences in the public and private sectors. She is most proud of working for New York City with Mayor Rudolph Guiliani in setting up major operations for the Administration of Children's Services during the onset of Y2K.
Born in Bristol, Virginia, to George Neal and Ida Mae Clayman, Dr. Woody had two college educated parents who sent her to the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science in mathematics, but did not want to be a teacher. At the time, the personal computer was just beginning to enter workspaces and homes, and Dr. Woody was interested in the challenge.
Dr. Woody joined the General Services Administration briefly as a programmer trainee, and accepted a position with Citizens Fidelity Bank and Trust Company as a systems engineer in 1972. Three years later, she joined Blue Bell Incorporated in North Carolina as a programmer and analyst. In 1979, Dr. Woody received an MBA with distinction from Wake Forest University, and became a programming supervisor with J.E. Baker Company in Pennsylvania. In 1982, Dr. Woody worked with AVCO in Stratford, Connecticut as a design supervisor of business systems, which brought her to Yale University as a project manager. She served there for 13 years, and in 1998, Dr. Woody became a consultant with ImageWork Technologies Corporation. In 2001, Dr. Woody joined CERT, and in 2004, she earned a PhD in information systems from Nova Southeastern University. In 2010, Dr. Woody accepted the role of technical manager of cyber security engineering at CERT.
In addition to her role as a computer whiz, Dr. Woody is the co-owner of the antiques firm Sign of the Sycamore. She has supported the Data Processing Standards Board and the CICS/VS Advisory Council, and has spoken at the 1989 National Fuse Conference, the 1990 Aion expert systems national conference, and at the Mason Business School with the College of William and Mary in 1994. Since 2016, Dr. Woody has been an executive partner with Mason. She has also written numerous technical manuals and contributed to countless professional journals. In 2009 Dr. Woody published "Applying Security Risk Management to Internet Connectivity: K-12 Schools and School Districts," and in 2016, she co-authored "Cyber Security Engineering: A Foundation for Operational Security."
Dr. Woody is a senior member of the Association for Computing Machinery, and is affiliated with the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, the Nova Southeastern University chapter of the computer honor society Upsilon Pi Epsilon, the Association for Image Information Management, the Project Management Institute, Delta Omicron, the National Association of Female Executives, the Association for System Management, and the American Business Woman's Association, which awarded her a 1978 Merit Award. In addition, she has been named 2008 Outstanding Alumni by Nova Southeastern University, a 1978 IBM Corporation Fellowship recipient, and a 1978 to 1979 grantee of the Stephen Bufton Memorial Educational Foundation. Dr. Woody was selected for inclusion in numerous volumes of Who's Who in America, Who's Who of American Women, Who's Who in Finance and Industry, the 2009 to 2010 volume of Who's Who in Finance and Business, the 2000 to 2001 volume of Who's Who in Science and Engineering, the 2003 volume of Who's Who in the World, and the 1987 to 1988 volume of Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America.
