Dr. Hermann is a prolific scholar and legal educator, and since he began teaching at DePaul University in Chicago his area of expertise has been in criminal law, privacy, health law, and legal philosophy. As a practicing lawyer, he focused in corporate law and antitrust cases. Dr. Hermann has since received numerous academic accolades, and has added the disciplines of art history, philosophy, languages, economics, the humanities, and theology to his ongoing scholarship.
Born in Southgate, Kentucky to Albert Joseph and Helen Marie Hermann, Dr. Hermann was inspired by a neighbor who was a lawyer and later became a federal judge, which piqued his interest in the legal field. He later encountered another prominent lawyer who became a mentor to Dr. Hermann, and spurred his pursuit of law. Dr. Hermann was able to attend Stanford University with the support of a George E. Gamble Honors Scholarship, and while studying there he joined the U.S. Department of Defense as a staffer with the directorate of development plans.
Dr. Hermann went on to Columbia University as a John Noble Fellow and was later named 1968 Dean's Scholar at Columbia University, earning a JD. that year as well. While at Columbia, he served with the Legislature Drafting Research Fund. He briefly taught at the University of Washington and the University of Kentucky. Dr. Hermann joined DePaul University in 1972, served for three years as an associate dean, and, in 1974, he was appointed a full professor of law and philosophy.
Flush with legal experience, Dr. Hermann continued to accrue postdoctoral academic fellowships throughout his career, notably from the University of Chicago, Harvard University, Northwestern University, Stanford University, Cornell University, the University of Illinois, and even the Supreme Court of the United States, where he served as a judicial fellow and assistant to the chief justice. He earned an LLM from Harvard in 1974 followed by a Master's degree, and a PhD from Northwestern in 1981. From 1984 to 1989, Dr. Hermann served as counsel with the law firm of DeWolfe, Poynton and Stevens.
In 1993, Dr. Hermann received a second Master's degree in Art History from the School of Art at the Institute of Chicago. He served as a lecturer at numerous institutions, including the University of North Dakota, the University of Rochester, UCLA, Claremont College, and as a law and medicine fellow with Cleveland Clinic.
Beginning in 2013, Dr. Hermann began study in theology and ministry. He earned degrees from Catholic Theological Union in Chicago, including a master's degree in theology in 2015, a master's degree in divinity in 2016, and a ecumenical doctor of ministry, to be conferred in 2018. He also received a diploma in Anglican studies from Bexley-Seabury Seminary, an Episcopal institution. Dr. Hermann lectured from 1979 to 1981 with the department of philosophy at Northwestern University, and has visited as a lecturer with Washington University, the University Brazilia, the University of Puerto Rico, the American Society Foundation, Christ College at Oxford University in England, and the University of Athens. In a consultancy role, Dr. Hermann has worked with numerous institutions, notably the Criminal Law Consortium of Cook County in Illinois, the Instituto Superiore Internazionale di Science Criminali in Italy, and the Commerce Federation in Brazil. Notably, he served as member of the state's attorney Task Force on Drug Law Enforcement in 1990 and with the Cook County Task Force on Gay and Lesbian Issues.
Dr. Hermann has contributed to a dizzying number of civic groups, including the Contemporary Arts Council of Chicago, the Institute of Genetics, Law and Ethics at the Illinois Masonic Hospital, the Illinois HIV Prevention Community Group, the Institute on Ethics in Human Research at the University of Illinois, the Chicago Area AIDS Task Force, Howard Brown Health Center, and more. Dr. Hermann's name graces the editor's columns of the Journal of Health and Hospital Law, the DePaul Journal of Healthcare Law, and the AIDS Monograph Series. He is naturally a member of an equally dizzying number of societies, including a plethora of legal, philosophical, medical, historical, and artistic groups.
Notably, Dr. Hermann has served as a leader with the Abraham Lincoln Marowitz chapter in the American Inns of Court, the American Association of Law Schools, the Renaissance Society the University of Chicago, the Oriental Institute, and the Chikamins Land Trust in Michigan. For his continuing and most excellent scholarship, as well as for services to the American legal field, Dr. Hermann was selected for inclusion in numerous volumes of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in American Law, Who's Who in the Midwest, Who's Who in Finance and Industry, and Who's Who in the World, as well as the 1987 to 1988 volume of Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America.
