Spending the early part of his career as a research analyst for Construction Engineering Research Laboratory in Champaign, Ill., Dr. Halpin spent his remaining years in higher education. Becoming a faculty member at the University of Illinois in 1972, he later taught as a professor at Georgia Institute of Technology before taking on the positions of A.J. Clark professor at the U. of Maryland and director of construction and engineering management at Purdue. Furthermore, Dr. Halpin has also served as an interim head of the school of civil engineering and Bowen Engineering head of construction engineering and management, also at Purdue University. A professor emeritus since 2006, Dr. Halpin has also been a consultant in construction management for quite some time and has been a visiting lecturer, scholar, and professor at a number of colleges outside of the U.S, in Romania, Germany, Switzerland and Australia.
Dr. Halpin has written a number of books over the years, including: "Design of Construction and Process Operations," "Construction Management," "Planung und Kontrolle von Bauprodktionsprozessen," "Constructo - A Heuristic Game for Construction Management," "Financial and Cost Control Concepts for Construction Management," "Planning and Analysis of Construction Operations," and "Financial Management and Accounting Fundamentals for Construction."
Completing a Bachelor of science at the U.S. Military Academy in 1961, Dr. Halpin then served in the U.S. Army from 1961 to 1967. He was commissioned 2nd lieutenant and advanced through the ranks to captain and company commander in Vietnam. He then returned to college, completing a PhD at the University of Illinois in 1973.
Dr. Halpin and his wife Maria Kirchner Halpin have one child. Over the course of his military and professional career, he has been the recipient of a Bronze Star, Distinguished Member American Society of Civil Engineers, Lifetime Achievement Award, and is a Distinguished Civil and Environmental Engineering Alumnus. Furthermore, he was a grantee of both the National Science Foundation and the U.S. Department of Energy. In recognition of his many accomplishments, Dr. Halpin has been featured in dozens of Who's Who editions, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Finance and Business, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, and Who's Who in the World.
