Carolina Vives wakes up one morning, having dreamed of a beautiful painting, and decides to find it to hang on one of the walls of his beach house. The more she delves into the search for this mysterious work of art which, according to her, has to exist in reality, the more her existence is in jeopardy. A Countess, a French governess, the sister of the hated commander of the secret police and a rebel of Vietnamese origin coexist with Carolina in a scenario where legends, mysteries and unnamed violences reach the great palaces of the most select Havana Society. After a brilliant world of dances and fabulous parties are heard the strange prophecies of a beggar, reappear legends of a tragic past, and live under the terror of a serial killer, the silk handkerchief. In a world where the elite delight in brilliant balls, select soirees and fabulous feats, one can still hear the strange prophecies of a beggar, one can sense ancient legends coming to life, as these women from high society live in terror of a serial killer. The novel seeks to capture a critical moment in the history of Cuba through five women with very different points of view and very different objectives; but these women somehow become part of a web that none can escape.
