Although Mr. Dam retired from the position of senior lecturer in 2014, he continues to be recognized by the law school as the Max Pam Professor Emeritus.
Throughout the course of his career, Mr. Dam has been continually recognized for his contributions to the legal profession. He has been featured in a wide range of honors publications, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Finance and Industry, Who's Who in the East, Who's Who in the Midwest and Who's Who in the World. In addition, he was selected as the recipient of the Reimar Lust Award, which was awarded by the Thyssen and Humboldt Foundation in 2007. Mr. Dam previously received an honorary Doctor of Laws from The New School for Social Research in 1983.
An accomplished author, Mr. Dam is credited with writing "The GATT: Law and International Economic Organization," "Oil Resources: Who Gets What How?," "The Rules of the Game: Reform and Evolution in the International Monetary System," "The Rules of the Global Game: A New Look at U.S. International Economic Policymaking," "Law-Growth Nexus: The Rule of Law and Economic Development" and "Economic Policy Beyond the Headlines." In addition, he is recognized as the co-author of "Federal Tax Treatment of Foreign Income," "Cryptography's Role in Securing the Information Society" and "Technology Policy Law and Ethics Regarding U.S. Acquisition and Use of Cyberattack Capabilities."
Prior to beginning a legal career, Mr. Dam received a Bachelor of Science from the University of Kansas in 1954. He went on to complete a JD at the University of Chicago before accepting a position as a law clerk to Justice Charles Whitaker with the Supreme Court of the United States. In 1958, Mr. Dam began serving as an associate with Cravath, Swaine & Moore, a position he held for two years before joining the University of Chicago Law School as a member of the faculty. During this time, he briefly served as a visiting professor with the University of Freiburg, which is located in Germany. Mr. Dam has been admitted to practice in New York since 1959.
In addition to his involvement in the legal arena, Mr. Dam has held numerous lucrative business roles. He is the former president and chief executive officer of United Way America, as well as the former vice president of law and external relations with the IBM Corporation. In addition, Mr. Dam previously served as the deputy secretary to the U.S. Department of State from 1982 to 1985.
Since 1986, Mr. Dam has maintained active involvement with the Brookings Institution, where he assumed the role of honorary board member in 2006. His previous associations include the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, American Academy of Diplomacy, American Law Institute, Shadow Financial Regulatory Committee, Munich Intellectual Property Law Center and Committee on Economic Development.
