A graduate of Harvard University, Dr. Hollis has been working in higher education her entire career. She taught at various universities, including Scripps College, The Union Institute, Sierra Nevada College, and for the majority of her career, State University of New York (SUNY), Empire State College. Taken on board at SUNY in 1996 as a center director and associate dean for the Central N.Y. Center in Syracuse, she then became involved in a variety of academic positions, including an associate professor, Coordinator of their Western Regional MA in Liberal Studies program, Coordinator of the MA in Liberal Studies Program 2014-2016, and, in 2007, a Core Faculty member of the MA in Liberal Studies Program and Professor.
From 2007-2011, Dr. Hollis has also served as a member of the Academic Personnel Committee for the college and in 2008-9 and 2010-11 as chair of the Academic Personnel Committee at SUNY, Empire State College. During her years at SUNY, Dr. Hollis also held the roles of convener of the historical studies and interdisciplinary studies Areas of Studies faculty, member of the Academic Policies and Learning Programs committee, and co-chair of the Academic Policies and Learning Programs committee.
Dr. Hollis' lifelong dream to teach began in her youth, when she began instructing the art of sailing at the age of 14. In the years since, her passion for helping people achieve their educational goals has remained constant. Receiving a AB at Smith College in 1962, she completed a PhD at Harvard University 20 years later. In 1990 she then became a certified lifetime instructor of history and humanities for the California Community College system.
Early in her career, Dr. Hollis was a coordinator for the Radcliffe (College) Summer Program in Science for high school girls. Responsible for making the program more diverse, she then added a "Big Sisters" program component to it. She was also actively involved in getting the young women in the program into the STEM related careers, and was responsible for increasing follow-through from an expected 50% to 62%-75% of females in science and mathematics arranged for college majors and careers.
The author of "The Ancient Egyptian: Tale of Two Brothers" in 1990, with its second edition released in 2008, Dr. Hollis is currently working on two other books, tentatively titled "Egyptian Goddesses: Their Beginnings, Actions, and Relationships in the Third Millennium BCE" and as invited editor for a volume tentatively titled "Oxford Handbook on Ancient Egypt and the Hebrew Bible." She has contributed to journals and encyclopedias, was assistant editor for the book "Working with No Data" in 1987, and has been a member of the advisory board for KMT: A Modern Journal of Ancient Egypt since 1991. Additionally, Dr. Hollis was co-editor of "Feminist Theory and the Study of Folklore" in 1993, and served as editor of "Hymns, Prayers and Songs: Anthology of Ancient Egyptian Lyrics & Poetry" by John L. Foster in 1996.
Dr. Hollis has held several roles in various professional organizations, including the New York State Network for Women Leaders in Higher Education, the New York Academy of Sciences, the Egyptology Society of New York, the Society of Biblical Literature, and the American Academy of Religion. The recipient of a Susan H. Turben Award for Excellence in Scholarship by SUNY, Empire State College, in 2006, Dr. Hollis was truly honored and surprised to receive the award. She also received a Scholar Across the College Award, and has been named to various editions of Who's Who of America, Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the East, Who's Who in the World, Who's Who in Religion, and Who's Who of American Women.
A mother of two and proud grandmother of two, Dr. Hollis has been volunteering her time with the Sierra Club since 1988. She has also been known to dedicate her time with various other organizations, such as the Odyssey of the Mind as a judge and problem captain, with the Tahoe Rim Trail as a crew chief, and with the Masterworks Chorale in various capacities, as well as playing recorders of five different sizes in the Rochester Chapter of the American Recorder Society, from which a small group in which she participates plays in nursing homes, senior centers, schools, farmers' markets, and churches.
