Currently, he works as the dean of the School of Public Health at Rutgers University; additionally, he holds the role of professor of biostatistics and social and behavioral health sciences. He is also a member of the Cancer Institute of New Jersey. Prior to joining Rutgers, he worked with New York University in a number of different roles, including professor of global public health, applied psychology and medicine, director of the Center for Health, Identity, Behavior & Prevention Studies, and the inaugural senior associate dean of academic and faculty affairs. For nearly ten years, Dr. Halkitis also served there as the founding associate dean for research and doctoral studies at the Steinhardt School, and prior to that as the director of research at Gay Men's Health Crisis.
A graduate of numerous prestigious institutions, including Columbia University and the City University of New York, Dr. Halkitis holds a Bachelor of Arts in Biology and Psychology, a Master of Science in Education, and Human Development and Learning, a Master of Philosophy in Educational Psychology, a PhD in Psychology, specializing in quantitative methods in psychology and education, and a Master of Public Health in Epidemiology. Giving back to the LGBT community is of the utmost importance to him, so he continues to affiliate himself with the American Psychological Association on the committee on psychology and AIDS, and the committee on lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender concerns.
A seasoned professional with decades of experience, Dr. Halkitis has been recognized many times for his professional accomplishments, including the Wayne F. Placek Award through the American Psychological Foundation, the HIV Prevention Leader Award through TheBody.com, and the Daniel E. Griffiths Research Award through the Steinhardt School at New York University. Throughout his career, he has contributed his plethora of knowledge to a number of books such as "The AIDS Generation: Stories and Survival of Resilience," a 2014 Lambda Literary Award nominee, "Methamphetamine addiction: Biological foundations, psychological factors and social consequences," and "HIV + Sex: The psychological and interpersonal dynamics of HIV-seropositive gay and bisexual men's relationships," as well as more than 200 peer-reviewed academic manuscripts.
Dr. Halkitis has also chaired a number of dissertations over the years on topics ranging from "the physical and emotional experience of violence in video games" to "methamphetamine use, executive functioning, and sexual risk behavior." In order to communicate issues of vital importance to the community, Dr. Halkitis serves on the editorial boards of numerous journals, including but not limited to the Journal of Gay & Lesbian Social Services, the Journal of Homosexuality, and the American Journal of Men's Health. He is the Editor-in-Chief of Behavioral Medicine.
