Dr. Karel Kithier Named a Lifetime Achiever by Marquis Who's Who

Dr. Kithier is an esteemed pathologist and educator with more than 60 years of experience in the health care field. His area of expertise is tumor markers of fetal origin, and over the years, he has made immense contributions to research on tumor markers Alpha Fetoprotein and Carcinoembryonic Antigen (AFP and CEA).

Dr. Kithier's involvement in the field of medicine is seemingly hereditary. His grandfather, for whom he was named, was a skilled physician who had written a number of scholarly papers. Dr. Kithier took it upon himself to read his grandfather's work and was thus inspired to follow in his footsteps. Since assuming his position as a practicing doctor, Dr. Kithier has brought incredible passion and love into his profession. He hopes that his family legacy will inspire his own son and grandson, as well as other professionals who aspire to make a difference in the world.

On December 6, 1930, Dr. Kithier was born to Karel and Marie (Bohackova) Kithier. His hometown was Prague, Czech Republic, where he studied and earned both an MD and a PhD. On May 6, 1961, he married Viktorie Svecova. Together they have one son - also named Karel. Dr. Kithier and his family arrived to the U.S. in 1968, and he was naturalized in 1978. Today, he lives with his family in Michigan. When not hard at work, he enjoys various hobbies, including outdoor living, fencing, fishing, and photography of military aircraft from World War I and World War II.

Dr. Kithier studied at Charles University, Prague, where he received an MD in 1962 and a PhD in 1967. Following his commencement, he was a research scientist at Prague's Research Institute for Child Development from 1967 to 1968. After relocating to the U.S., he worked as a research scientist at the Child Research Center of Michigan, Detroit from 1968 to 1971. Dr. Kithier then moved to the Michigan Cancer Foundation and held this position until 1974. Afterward, he began his career as an educator. He served as an associate professor of pathology at Wayne State University School of Medicine from 1974 to 1995. During this period, he traveled to Hokkaido University in Sapporo, Japan, where he acted as a visiting scientist. Dr. Kithier spent time in Japan from October 1988 to February 1989. The experience and new cultural perspectives undoubtedly transformed his career. He also juggled responsibilities as the Chief of Clinical Immunology and the Associate Head of Clinical Chemistry at the Detroit Receiving Hospital and University Health Center. From 1989 to 1996, Dr. Kithier was the medical director of Special Chemistry at the Detroit Receiving Hospital and University Health Center. However, his longest held position was staff pathologist at the VA Medical Center in Allen Park, Mich. from 1976 to 2001.

Dr. Kithier was one of the founding members of the International Society for Oncodevelopmental Biology and Medicine. He was also a member of distinguished organizations, such as the National Academy of Clinical Biochemistry, the American Association of Clinical Chemists, the American Association of Immunologists, and the American Association of Cancer Research.

Throughout Dr. Kithier's career, he has been a contributor to various professional journals within his field of study. He has also appeared in many Marquis Who's Who publications. Specifically, he was featured in the 8th and 9th editions of Who's Who in the World. He was also published in the 20th edition of Who's Who in the Midwest, as well as the 6th edition of Who's Who in American Education. More recently, he was featured in the 57th and 58th editions of Who's Who in America.
