He speaks fluent German, and serves in particular as an adviser regarding German, Swiss, and Austrian companies as well as cross-border legal issues. Mr. Thal is most proud of his ability to connect people internationally and to develop mutual understanding, and has been a trusted attorney of both the Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany and the Austrian Trade Commission in New York City since the late '80s. In 2005, Mr. Thal added the Swiss Consulate in New York to the list.
A Big Apple native, Mr. Thal was born to Michael and Mildred Thal in 1942, and began his career studying at the University of Michigan for his bachelor's degree and law degree. While studying law he had the opportunity to assist a professor in Germany, working in both German and English. Mr. Thal went on to conduct postgraduate studies at the University of Tubingen in Germany as a Fulbright Scholar, supported with grants from the Ford Foundation and from the Deutsche Akademisches Austauchdienst. He also conducted studies with the New School of Social Research in New York City. In 1972, Mr. Thal became a partner in the firm Thal and Youtt in New York, and was admitted to practice with the U.S. Supreme Court.
The firm did well, and in 1984, Mr. Thal left to join Kaplan, Russin and Vecchi for four years. He went on with Summit, Rovins and Feldesman from 1988 to 1990, serving concurrently as president of Export Assist Corporation from 1988 to 1990. In the early '90s, Mr. Thal joined Oppenheimer Wolff and Donnelly, moving on to LeBoeuf, Lamb, Greene and MacRae. In that decade, Mr. Thal became a foreign legal consultant admitted in Frankfurt, Germany and cofounded the German-American Partnership Program, one of the largest student exchange programs in the country. Mr. Thal also visited a number of German institutions as a visiting lecturer on international law.
In 2003, Mr. Thal joined Latham and Watkins and was welcomed by Phillips Nizer in 2007. He is the co-author of the firm's quarterly German newsletter and led the Der Deutscher Verein German executive club as president from 2008 to 2010. Mr. Thal is the president of Stadel Friends Incorporated, supporting the Stadel Museum in Frankfurt from across the pond. His unique legal relationships led him to membership with the International Bar Association, the New York State Bar Association, and the German American Lawyers Association. Mr. Thal was welcomed for inclusion in numerous volumes of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Law, Who's Who in the East, and Who's Who in the World. He has one son, Eric Alexander, and enjoys boating, fishing, and camping.
