Dr. Ohtaka has taught as a professor of science education at the graduate school of comprehensive human science at the University of Tsukuba in Tennodai since 1993. His research unifies the disciplines of cognitive science, psychology, sociology, morality research, and science theory in the passing on of concepts to students. Dr. Ohtaka has traveled internationally to study how a single concept can differ from country to country, and is noted for theoretical research in the field, including experiments with gifted students in junior high schools.
Born in the city of Shirosato in Ibaraki prefecture to Gengo and Ae Ohtaka, Dr. Ohtaka matriculated at the University of Tsukuba and earned a PhD in 1981. He joined the faculty as a professor in 1993 and was certified in scientific education at the university in 1996. In his student days, Dr. Ohtaka received grants to study science education in the Meiji era of Japan's history, spanning 1868 to 1912, as well as German science education. As a professor, he has received sustained grant funding from 1994 to 2015 from the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, as well as grants from the University of Tsukuba. Using these funds, Dr. Ohtaka studied environmental education and sustainability education in the U.S., U.K., and Germany, producing numerous articles for professional publications.
From 2001 to 2004, Dr. Ohtaka chaired the doctoral program in education for Tsukuba, transitioning to chair of the Institute of Education there for one year. He chaired the master's program in education from 2007 to 2010, producing many educators who were versed in international teaching methods. From 2010 to 2013, Dr. Ohtaka became associate provost of the graduate school of comprehensive human sciences. He has also served as the chair for the Central Council for Education at the Department of Science Education in Tokyo since 2006. For continued services to scientific enlightenment, Dr. Ohtaka was selected for inclusion in numerous volumes of Who's Who in the World, as well as two volumes of Who's Who in Science and Engineering from 2016 to 2017. He married Kimie Akutsu in 1982, with whom he has three children, Tadasu, Akane, and Azusa.
