James W. Hall Named a Lifetime Achiever by Marquis Who's Who

    SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY, September 07, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to name James W. Hall a Lifetime Achiever. An accomplished listee, Dr. Hall celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. Dr. Hall is chancellor emeritus of Antioch University and president emeritus of the State University of New York, Empire State College. As founding President of Empire State College, a statewide and highly experimental institution, he served from 1971 to 1997. Previously, he served as a professor, dean, and higher education administrator with academic specialties in music history and American history. From 2010 to 2016, Dr. Hall worked with the Presidents Forum to craft the State Authorization Reciprocity Agreement (SARA), which helped to protect academic quality and portability for distance-learning students.

In 1937, Dr. Hall was born in Chester, Pennsylvania to James William and Margaret Hall. Completing a B. Music in 1959 at Bucknell University, Dr. Hall completed further graduate studies as a Danforth Graduate Fellow. He earned a Master of Sacred Music from Union Theological Seminary, as well as an MA and PhD in American Civilization from the University of Pennsylvania. His first teaching position was at Cedar Crest College where he taught both musical subjects and interdisciplinary courses in the fine arts.

His administrative career began in 1966 for the State University of New York in System Administration. In 1970, he was appointed assistant vice chancellor of policy and planning. While serving as president of Empire State College, he also served as a vice chancellor for educational technology and as interim president for SUNY Old Westbury (1980-1981). In 1998, Dr. Hall accepted the position of chancellor at Antioch University, serving until 2002.

In his retirement, he has served as an independent educational consultant from 2002 to 2018, and worked with the Commission on Quality Assurance and Alternative Higher Education, and the Presidents' Forum. Among his books, Dr. Hall has authored texts on education, including In Opposition to Core Curriculum: Alternative Models for Undergraduate Education with Barbara Kevles (1982) and Access Through Innovation: New Colleges for New Students (1991). He was also the editor of Forging the American Character (1971) in Holt Rinehart's American Problem Series.

Dr. Hall holds honorary doctoral degrees from the Thomas Edison State College of New Jersey, University System of New Hampshire, the DePaul University of Chicago, and SUNY, presented in 2006. He has served as a trustee of Monmouth University, the Fielding Institute, and the U.S. Open University. In the '90s, Dr. Hall was a trustee of the board at Saratoga Hospital, on the National Commission on Cooperative Education, and the board of overseers for the Nelson A. Rockefeller Institute of Government at SUNY. Dr. Hall held affiliation with the Society for Values in Higher Education, the American Association for Higher Education, the Association of American Colleges, and the Council for Adult and Experiential Learning. He is a distinguished alumnus of Bucknell University. Dr. Hall enjoys tennis, music, golf, and writing.

For a lifetime dedicated to the administration of higher learning, Dr. Hall was selected for inclusion in numerous volumes of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the East, Who's Who in the World, and the 1986 to 1987 volume of Who's Who in the South and Southwest.
