Dr. Ariyan is an internationally known surgeon who first began practicing medicine a little over 50 years ago in 1966 as an intern at UCLA. Enjoying the opportunity to serve as an assistant resident of general surgery at the University of California at San Diego, he then completed a NIH fellowship training at Yale before completing his remaining years of training at Yale University as an assistant resident of general surgery, resident of plastic surgery, chief resident of general surgery, and chief resident of plastic surgery. Today, Dr. Ariyan is the Frank F. Kanthak Professor Emeritus of Surgery, Plastic Surgery, and Otolaryngology and the clinical program leader for the melanoma program at Smilow Cancer Hospital. From 1979 to 1991, he also served as professor and chairman of plastic surgery at Yale University, progressing from assistant to associate to full professor between the years of 1976 and 1991 and Associate Chief of the Department of Surgery 2007-2013.
Recognized for specializing in the surgery of the head and neck and malignant melanoma, Dr. Ariyan originated and developed several myocutaneous flaps for reconstructions of the head and neck, most notably the pectoralis major flap, which has become the most commonly used flap for head and neck reconstruction worldwide. His research has resulted in authoring and co-authoring more than 300 scientific papers, as well as five books, including "The Handbook," which has been published in English, Spanish, and Japanese. He has also served on editorial boards and as a reviewer for a number of surgical journals.
Throughout his career, Dr. Ariyan has been a visiting professor at many institutions throughout the country, including Rush University Medical Center, New York University, Massachusetts General Hospital, Johns Hopkins University, and Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, and outside the U.S. at the University of Singapore and the University of Madrid. He has been an invited guest speaker on many occasions, was a volunteer surgeon at the Hospital of Albert Schweitzer Deschapelles in Haiti, served on various boards, including the Visiting Nurses Association, on several related committees, and in several roles with the American Board of Plastic Surgery. He also served as President of a number of professional organizations, including the New England Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons, the Northeastern Society Plastic Surgeons, the American Association of Plastic Surgeons, and Vice-Chairman of the American Board of Plastic Surgeons.
In addition to receiving several awards from many organizations, Dr. Ariyan was also recognized as Best Breast Cancer Doctors by Good Housekeeping magazine in 1989, and receiveda Kabakjian Award for outstanding contributions in the field of science in 1991. Dr. Ariyan was named to Best Doctors of New York for 2001 to 2005, and has also been named to Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, and Who's Who in Science and Engineering.
After completing a BA at Long Island University in 1962 and an MD at New York Medical College, Dr. Ariyan later went back to college to complete a Master of Business Administration at the University of New Haven in 1993. Also, in 1981, he received an honorary Master's degree at Yale University for his efforts.
