Employed with Jones Day law firm for the majority of his career, Mr. Pogue is an accomplished attorney who was born in Boston, grew up in the Washington DC area, and began his legal career as a first lieutenant in the Judge Advocate General's Corps with the Department of Army in the Pentagon. He joined Jones Day in 1957. With locations in more than 20 countries, including all across the U.S., Jones Day provides legal counsel that extends to many areas of law while employing more than 2,500 lawyers across five continents.
Entering the law firm as an associate attorney in their Cleveland office, Mr. Pogue made Partner within just four years. In 1984, he became Acting Managing Partner, and in the following year, he became Managing Partner. During these very impressionable years, the firm grew significantly and entered into international markets for the first time. Retiring from Jones Day in 1994 after nearly 40 years of service, Mr. Pogue was taken on board as Senior Advisor for Dix & Eaton, a public relations firm in Cleveland, only to return to Jones Day in 2004 as a consultant with the title of Senior Advisor.
Mr. Pogue's expertise has included antitrust and corporate takeover defense. In addition to having practiced in the general fields of corporate and litigation law, he also served as an arbitrator or mediator in many major commercial disputes. During his career, he spent many years speaking professionally and wrote extensively on private sector regionalism.
Earning a BA at Cornell University in 1950, followed by a JD at Michigan Law School in 1953, Mr. Pogue then joined the State Bars of Maryland and Ohio. Mr. Pogue has also been admitted to practice in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio, as well as the Sixth, Ninth, and D.C. Circuits of the U.S. Court of Appeals. He maintains memberships with the American Bar Association and the Ohio State Bar Association, both of which he served as Chairman of their Antitrust Sections. He also served as the Director of several corporations, like Continental Airlines, Derlan Industries of Canada, and KeyCorp. Mr. Pogue has also served as Chairman of a number of organizations outside of law, including The Cleveland Foundation, the Greater Cleveland Roundtble, and the Newcomen Society of the U.S.
Additionally, Mr. Pogue was very present in academia as a Trustee for Case Western Reserve University, The University of Akron, and the Cleveland Institute of Music. He was also founding trustee of the Business Alliance on Higher Education and the Economy in Ohio. The recipient of numerous awards over the years, including an Outstanding Alumnus Award by the University of Michigan, a Humanitarian Award by the NCCJ, and being named Cleveland Business Executive of the Year, Mr. Pogue also received honorary degrees from the University of Akron, Cleveland Institute of Music, and Cleveland University. Furthermore, he was also named to dozens of editions of Who's Who, to include Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Law, Who's Who in Finance and Industry, Who's Who in the Midwest, and Who's Who in the World.
