Born to Charles F. and Beverly M. Oehler, Dr. Oehler subsequently studied at numerous schools and training Institutes in 4 countries including varying periods of post-graduate study at the universities of Cambridge (UK), Harvard (USA), Oxford (UK) & two distinguished research institutes - one in Oxford (UK) & the other at an Australian National Research Center in Sydney. He has earned degrees from three US schools: a B.A. in Sociology, an M.A. in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), and a Doctorate in Ministry (D.Min.) in Conflict Management. Michael also completed 15+ specialized certificates in safety/security, or language/culture subjects at distinguished schools or training/research institutes in the USA, England, Australia and Japan. Additionally, he qualified for five homeland security-related certifications from two professional industry associations.
His other public and private sector domestic and international teaching/training and administrative experience further encompasses:
- 16 years holding Lecturer through Professor-level faculty member posts with state and national universities in Japan teaching cultural, language, and linguistic subjects.
- 12 years working as a faculty member at Lecturer through Associate Professor levels with two private schools (one a junior college/college and the other a university) teaching cultural, language, and linguistic subjects.
- Nearly a decade carrying out advanced-level training and management duties in the private sector corporate training field presenting on cultural, language, risk and crisis management, safety and security topics.
Dr. Oehler's humanitarian and volunteer activities range from organizing and executing disaster relief efforts in response to the devastating earthquake affecting the Kobe, Japan area in 1995, through functioning in various roles for professional organizations. For example, selected as a Citizen Ambassador for The People-to-People Ambassador Program to Europe in 1993, he successfully participated in that program. As a Board Member on three professional boards related to the American Board for Certification in Homeland Security (ABCHS) between 2011 and the present; he has held the roles of Secretary on two of those boards. In these board-level posts, he has contributed to developing two boards' U.S. national certification exams & study guides, edited board member PowerPoint presentations prior to use at industry conferences, and edited numerous articles submitted to Inside Homeland Security Magazine prior to publication in print or online.
In 2007, Michael was first selected for inclusion in: Marquis Who's Who in the World and has continued to be listed in this publication on an annual basis since then.
