He has worked for the firm since 1993, and dedicated over 30 years to the financial profession in New York. In 2017, Mr. Jones accepted the honorable recognition of his career in serving his alma mater as a member of the dean's advisory board at Harvard Business School.
Mr. Jones got his start in Plainfield, New Jersey, born to Horatio Gates Jones and Audrey Irma Jones. He attended Harvard University to earn an AB in 1983 and an MBA in 1987. Mr. Jones entered finance as a high yield banker in New York, NY, for the First Boston Corporation, now acquired by Credit Suisse. He served for six years before going on to a post as coverage officer for financial sponsors in Morgan Stanley's New York office.
In 1997, the firm sent him to the London office to head European leveraged finance, where he served for three years. Mr. Jones returned to New York as head of global leveraged finance, transitioning to head of the global financial sponsor group, before leading the corporate finance department in 2004. He served as one of the heads of private equity from 2006 to 2010, when he was appointed sole head of the department at Morgan Stanley.
Morgan Stanley manages $2.1 trillion in wealth operations, and reported a 60 percent surge in stock prices for the quarter in January of 2017, largely due to the equities trading unit generating $2 billion dollars in revenue. In May of 2017, the firm raised $125 million in commitments for a global impact fund to invest in private equity that positively affects society or environment. Mr. Jones serves with the Harvard Business School Fund as chairman, and an executive member. He is also a patron of the arts, specifically as a member of the board of trustees of the American Repertory Theater as well as a director on the board of Shakespeare's Globe. He served as president of the board of trustees of Brearley School in New York from 2006 to 2013, and continues to serve on the board of the International Biomedical Research Alliance. Mr. Jones is also a member of the Phi Beta Kappa honor society.
