Dr. Kim is a career naval officer with the Republic of Korea Navy, and holds the rank of captain after many years of service with airborne divisions of the navy. He is particularly skilled with naval aviation force development, after serving as a commander for the 609 Air Group, the 613 Air Squadron, and the air search and rescue operation following the Sewol Ferry Disaster in 2014. Dr. Kim was decorated with numerous awards including his participation as a commander in the 2010 Rim of the Pacific Exercise (RIMPAC), the largest international maritime warfare exercise in the world.
Born in 1967, Dr. Kim joined the Korean Navy early on and attended the U.S. Naval Academy to study mathematics. He earned a Master of Science in Operations Analysis from the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School and went on to earn a PhD in Industrial Systems Engineering from Yonsei University. While studying for his doctorate, Dr. Kim served in the Korean Navy as a talented air commander. Over the years, he has achieved innovations in crew scheduling, structural equation modeling, naval aviation force development, and modeling engine analyses. He is a member of the Operations Research Society and the U.S. Naval Academy.
In 2010, RIMPAC lasted for one month between June and July, involving Australia, Canada, Chile, Colombia, France, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, the Netherlands, Peru, South Korea, Singapore, Thailand, and the U.S. Dr. Kim has received numerous awards for excellence with RIMPAC and other collaborations, including a Presidential citation and a Minister of National Defense Award from his native South Korea. He is the recipient of a U.S. Joint Commendation Medal. In civilian life, Dr. Kim enjoys his skills as a licensed pilot and power boat driver. He is particularly fond of golf, running marathons, and triathlon. Dr. Kim is married, and has a son and daughter.
