Dr. Barie was the 2004 recipient of the Distinguished Alumnus Award of Boston University School of Medicine.
Certified through the American Board of Surgery in surgery and surgical critical care, Dr. Barie began a career in medicine upon receiving an MD, cum laude, from Boston University in 1977. He completed a junior residency in surgery at The New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center in 1979. From 1979 to 1981, Dr. Barie completed a fellowship in surgery and physiology at Albany Medical College before returning to The New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center to complete a senior residency in surgery between 1981 and 1983. He remained with The New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center until 1984 as the administrative chief resident of surgery.
In 1984, Dr. Barie joined Weill Medical College and Cornell University as an assistant professor of surgery. Within five years, he was promoted to the position of associate professor, a role he held for more than a decade before promotion to professor of surgery and professor of public health in medicine with Weill Medical College in 1998. In 2003, Dr. Barie completed an MBA, with distinction, at Auburn University.
As a testament to his commitment to the medical community, Dr. Barie is recognized as a fellow with a wide range of medical associations, including the American College of Surgeons, the Infectious Diseases Society of North America, the American Surgical Association, and the American College of Critical Care Medicine, which recognizes him as a master fellow. Fewer than 20 surgeons hold this distinction worldwide. He also maintains active membership with the Surgical Infection Society, where he served as a council member between 1995 and 1998, treasurer between 1998 and 2003, president-elect from 2003 to 2004, and president from 2004 to 2005. At the present moment, Dr. Barie also serves as the executive director for the Surgical Infection Society Foundation for Education and Research. He has also been president of the Society of Critical Care Medicine in 2008, the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma in 2005, the Halsted Society in 2007, and the New York State Society of Surgeons from 1997 to 1999.
A recognized authority in his field of practice, Dr. Barie has written more than 750 professional articles pertaining to his areas of expertise. In addition, he was the founding editor-in-chief of Surgical Infections, as well as a member of the editorial board since 1993. Dr. Barie has held an integral role in additional publications, including Shock, Contemporary Surgery, Air Medical Journal, Journal of Surgical Outcomes, Journal of Trauma, Critical Care Medicine, New Horizons, Pediatric Critical Care Medicine, New Surgery, and Southern Medical Journal. He was a co-editor of the second edition of "Acute Care Surgery" in 2013, which has been reprinted in its third edition. In 1997, he received the Best New Book Award in the Medical Science Category from the Association of Medical Publishers for the textbook "Surgical Intensive Care."
