Dr. McFadden is a professor of cardiothoracic surgery and the surgical director of lung transplantation at the Keck School of Medicine with the University of Southern California. He has served in the position since 2006, and has worked as a cardiovascular and thoracic surgeon with hospitals in the Los Angeles and New Orleans areas for 43 years. Dr. McFadden contributes to the editorial boards of the Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery and Chest Disease Reports as a celebrated medical educator, honored with a plethora of teaching awards.
Born in Hobbs, New Mexico to Paul Marion and Venita Lenora McFadden, Dr. McFadden studied at Louisiana State University and became a doctor in 1974 with Tulane University. He served his surgical internship and residency with the Tulane University School of Medicine and went on to complete a residency in thoracic and cardiovascular surgery at the Ochsner Clinic in New Orleans. Dr. McFadden joined Stanford University Hospital in 1981 as a cardiovascular and thoracic surgeon, concurrently serving as the chief of cardiovascular surgery for Palo Alto Medical Clinic beginning in 1983. In 1991, Dr. McFadden returned to New Orleans to teach at Tulane as clinical professor of surgery, and served with the Ochsner Clinic as surgical director of the lung transplantation program. Dr. McFadden was appointed director of the thoracic surgery program from 1998 to 2006, when he was welcomed by the University of Southern California.
Additionally, Dr. McFadden served to the rank of captain with the U.S. Naval Reserve from 1984 to 1994. He served as ship's surgeon for the USS Enterprise aircraft carrier in 1987 and 1988, as well as chief of thoracic and vascular surgery with the Naval Hospital in Oakland, California during his active duty call-up during Desert Storm. He was awarded a National Defense Service Medal, an Armed Forces Reserve Medal, two Meritorious Unit Commendations, and awards for both pistol and rifle marksmanship.
Dr. McFadden's surgical prowess has been recognized by a number of industry magazines. He is the recipient of a 2014 Berne Teaching Award, a 1994 Tiki Award from Southern Surgical Associate, a 1995 Hurst B. Hatch Memorial Teaching Award from Ochsner Clinic Foundation, a 2010 Teaching Award from the Los Angeles County+USC Medical Cernter and Keck Medical School, and a 2012 Outstanding Alumnus Award from Tulane Medical School. When not in the operating room, Dr. McFadden has volunteered his time as a board director of the YMCA in the Palo Alto area, as well as chair of the Heart-Lung Committee of One Legacy OPO in Los Angeles, and as chair of the thoracic surgery division of Huntington Memorial Hospital. He currently serves on the board of governors of Tulane University School of Medicine.
For excellence in cardiothoracic medicine, Dr. McFadden was selected for inclusion in numerous volumes of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the West, and Who's Who in Science and Engineering, as well as two volumes of Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare and the 2001 volume of Who's Who in the World. He is the father of Heather Anne, Jennifer Suzanne, Bryn Ellen, and Callan Michael with his wife, Jennifer Marie James. Dr. McFadden enjoys hunting, fishing, weight lifting, sailing, and football.
