As an expert in personal and organizational development with over 43 years of experience, Dr. Carter provides expert services informed by his study of behavioral and social sciences. He founded the consultancy firm of John D. Carter and Associates in 1969, and taught for many years as an assistant professor of applied behavioral science. In 2004, Dr. Carter founded the Gestalt Institute of Cleveland Organization & Systems Development Integrative Studies Center, helping to further the body of knowledge called GestaltOSD created by him and his colleagues. John has served as consultant and advisor to more than forty presidents of corporations.
Dr. Carter was born in Tuskegee, Alabama, in 1944 to Arthur, a Tuskegee Airman, and Ann Carter. He earned a 1959 Eagle Scout and Firecrafter Award as a young man and was honored as a Minisino in 1961. He graduated from Arsenal Technical High School in Indianapolis Indiana, and attended Indiana University to earn a Master of Science in 1967. Two years later, he founded his private consultancy and became a field assessment officer with the Peace Corp, helping to encourage an international exchange of American culture. From 1968-1970, he worked in student personal services for University of California, Davis. He was granted a National Defense Education Act Fellowship, which he applied to a PhD from Case Western Reserve University, graduating in 1974. Dr. Carter taught as an assistant professor, served as director of student affairs and was appointed assistant dean of organization development for the School of Dentistry at Case Western Reserve University.
1974 was also the year Dr. Carter became chairman of the board at the Gestalt Institute of Cleveland, where he helped to develop the psychological practice of gestalt therapy and founded Gestalt OSD, which is rooted in systems theory, organization development theory, existentialism, phenomenology and Zen Buddhism. He currently serves as CEO of the GestaltOSD Center.
Because GestaltOSD examines the role of relationships and personal responsibility, it is uniquely suited for leaders and organizational development practitioners. In 1984, Dr. Carter joined the Portsmouth Consultant Group. He has taught at a number of universities, among them are American University, Fielding University, Saybrook University, Columbia and Benedictine. John has served on the executive boards of the leading professional organizations in his field. He teaches Heartfulness meditation as a preceptor for Shri Ram Chandra Mission.
He is the author of "Counseling the Helping Relationship," "Managing the Merger Integration Process," "Institutionalizing Change," and "Making a Difference With Your Presence".
Dr. Carter has received numerous honors for excellence in his field such as the Honorary Fellow Award of the Gestalt Institute of Cleveland, Emeritus member of National Training Laboratories, Distinguished Scholar at the Benedictine University Program in Organizational Development and Distinguished Consulting Faculty at Saybrook University. He is a life member of Kappa Alpha Psi and Alpha Phi Omega. In 2009 he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Organization Development Network, and in 2016 the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Gestalt Center for Organizational Development. Dr. Carter was selected for inclusion in numerous volumes of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the Midwest, and Who's Who in the World, as well as three volumes of Who's Who in Finance and Business, two volumes of Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America, and the 2002 volume of Who's Who in Finance and Industry. He is the proud parent of Annelise Grace Hopper Carter, alongside his wife, Veronica Hopper Carter.
