He is well renowned in both regional and international medical societies, and is known for his development of the surgical linear stapler. As of 2015, Dr. Kang concurrently serves as chief executive officer of Meditulip, a medical device venture company that manufactures his minimally invasive surgical devices, which have been applied in cancer operations.
Born in Republic of Korea, Dr. Kang matriculated with Chungnam National University to become a doctor, and in accordance with the Republic of Korean medical industry, served the equivalent of his internship and residency at the esteemed institution. He joined the renowned Samsung Medical Center in 2008, and served a one year fellowship while earning a PhD from Chungnam National University. Dr. Kang was immediately accepted as a clinical professor of his alma mater, and went on to become an assistant professor in 2011. As of 2016, he serves as an associate professor of the university, and in 2017, Dr. Kang was promoted to chief of the thoracic division.
As a rising star in the cardiovascular surgery field, Dr. Kang made great strides in advancing the tools of the trade, and was honored with a 2010 Johnson and Johnson Medical Award as well as a 2009 Scientific Award from the Korean Society for Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery. According to Meditulip's website, Johnson and Johnson along with Medtronic occupy approximately 93 percent of the global market for surgical staplers, and Dr. Kang's company was established in 2015 to offer an alternative product for surgeons to choose from.
Dr. Kang currently holds four domestic patents on his device, and is in discussions for international patents in China, the U.S., Japan, Europe, and India. Meditulip is completely established by the university faculty of Chungnam National University, and it was selected as a Chungbuk Industry University Cooperation Research and Development Enterprise. Furthermore, Meditulip was chosen for the TIPS program.
Dr. Kang's developments have been well received by the Korean medical community, and he was chosen as a faculty member of the second Asian Single Port VATS Surgery Symposium in 2014. He is a member of the scientific committees of the Korean Society for Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery and the Korean Society for Thoracic Oncologic Surgery.
