Dr. Gim was born in Chuncheon, in the Gangwon province of Republic of Korea. He attended Korea University and traveled to Georgia State University to earn a Master's degree in Actuarial Science. In 1995, he completed a PhD in business administration there, and returned to Republic of Korea to serve with the Korean Army in 1996. Over the years, he has served as a consulting professor with the Korean ministries of education, human resources development, culture, sports and tourism.
Dr. Gim has taught with the defense acquisition of the government of Korea, as well as Samsung Company and Autodesk. He served as director of the Vietnam Education Center in 2008, dean of research and university-industry cooperation at Soongsil in 2009, and president of the Soongsil Computer Institute in 2012.
Dr. Gim's papers cover everything from data mining for customer relationship management to fuzzy sets and systems. He has served as an editor of the Asia Pacific Journal of Innovation and Entrepreneurship and the Society of Information Technology Services. Since 1996, Dr. Gim has worked with the Service Science National Forum, as well as numerous Korean managerial science groups and UNESCO as a consultant for technical vocational education and training in Africa. Additionally, Dr. Gim's research has been supported by grants from the Ministry of Industry and Trade and the Korea International Cooperation Agency.
For his many services to science, Dr. Gim is the recipient of a 2007 Testimonial Award from the Korean deputy prime minister for economic affairs, a 2010 Best Researcher in IT Services of Korea award, as well as 2008 and 2016 Best Teaching Professor Awards and a 2016 Best Research Award from Soongsil University. He has been named to 2002, 2008, 2016, and 2017 Best Paper Awards in international conferences. Dr. Gim was selected for inclusion in the 2015 and 2016 volumes of Who's Who in the World. He has an adult son and daughter, Simon and Gina, with his wife, Jinryung.
