For more than 35 years, Dr. Chatterton has served as a professor at the Northwestern University Medical School. He previously served the University of Illinois as an associate professor from 1972 to 1979 and assistant professor in the College of Medicine from 1970 to 1972. Dr. Chatterton graduated from Cornell University with a PhD in 1963 and a Bachelor of Science in 1958. He also holds a Master of Science from the University of Connecticut.
He began his professional pursuits in 1963 as a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard University Medical School. From 1965 to 1970, he was a research associate in the Division of Oncology at the Institute of Steroid Research at Montefiore Hospital and Medical Center. Outside of his career in research and academia, Dr. Chatterton served as the director of shared clinical laboratories of the Northwestern Medical Faculty Foundation from 1999 to 2014, as well as the Department of Obstetrics-Gynecology from 1996 to 1999. He was also the director of the Immunoassay Facility at the R.H. Lurie Cancer Center at the Northwestern University Medical School from 1997 to 2000.
Dr. Chatterton served as the chairperson of the Radiation Safety Committee of Northwestern University, member of the Intellectual Properties Committee, member of the Science Advisory Committee of the Agency for International Development, and chairperson of the Institutional Review Board. He is a member of multiple organizations, including the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Association of Clinical Research, the American Association of Cancer Research, and the Society for the Study of Reproduction. Dr. Chatterton is also a member of the Society of Gynecologic Investigation, the Endocrine Society, the American Chemical Society, and the New York Academy of Sciences. Furthermore, he is a member of both Phi Kappa Phi and Sigma Xi.
Dr. Chatterton was a grantee of the Army Research Office from 1987 to 1994, the Agency for International Development from 1971 to 1986, the National Science Foundation from 1995 to 1998, and the National Institutes of Health from 1995 to 2010 and from 1972 to 1990. He has been featured in numerous editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the Midwest, and Who's Who in the World. He has published numerous articles in professional journals, and he holds a patent for a method of totally suppressing ovarian follicular development and a patent for methods for ovulation detection.
Dr. Chatterton is the son of Robert Treat and Irene Chatterton. He has four children: Ruth Ellen, William Matthew, James Daniel, and Derek Scott. For more than 30 years, he has been married to Carol J. Lewis.
