Mr. Guastaferro is a distinguished space sciences administrator as well as a consultant for NASA, the College of William and Mary, and the Florida Institute of Technology. He is best known as the Deputy Project Manager of the Viking Mars orbiter and lander projects of the '70s, which provided the first ever photographic observations from the surface of the Red Planet. Mr. Guastaferro went on to leadership positions with several prestigious institutions in aerospace, notably serving as President and CEO of nView Corporation in Newport News, Virginia.
Born to Carlo and Rafaela Nancy Guastaferro in Hoboken, New Jersey, Mr. Guastaferro earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the New Jersey Institute of Technology and served with the U.S. Air Force from 1955 to 1958. He went on to earn a Master's Degree in Business Administration from Florida State University and joined NASA in 1963. Mr. Guastaferro was appointed Deputy Project Manager of the Viking Project in 1974, dedicated to putting scientific instruments on the surface of Mars. He proceeded to have a successful career as an aerospace director while Viking 1 and Viking 2 continued to transmit images until the early 1980s. Mr. Guastaferro earned an AMP from Harvard University in 1984.
In 1979, Mr. Guastaferro was appointed Director for the planetary programs at NASA headquarters in Washington, and in 1981, he became Deputy Director with the Ames Research Center in California. From 1985 to 1996, he served with the Lockheed Missiles and Space Company, and held the title of Vice President executive director for 12 years. Mr. Guastaferro became CEO of nView Corporation in 1996.
That same year, Mr. Guastaferro became an executive partner and lecturer with NASA and the Florida Institute of Technology. In addition, Mr. Guastaferro has been named to the board of trustees of the International Space University from 1993 to 1996, chaired the Hampton Roads Technology Council, and has advised the technology committee for the New Jersey Institute of Technology.
Mr. Guastaferro has accrued fellowship with numerous scientific groups, notably the American Astronautics Society, the Mars First Landing Society, the International Astronautics Federation, and the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, which awarded him a 1982 Space Systems Medal. He was named 1989 Eminent Engineer by Tau Beta Pi, and is the recipient of 1974, 1977, and 1978 Langley Special Achievement Awards from NASA. The administration went on to award Mr. Guastaferro a 1977 Outstanding Leadership Medal, a 1980 Superior Performance Award, a 1981 Exceptional Service Medal, and a 1982 Presidential Meritorious Rank. He was named a 1997 Distinguished Alumnus of the New Jersey Institute of Technology.
Mr. Guastaferro was selected for inclusion in numerous volumes of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, and Who's Who in the World. He was the husband of Eleanor Lago (they had been married for 51 years until her passing in 2005), and is the father of Carl, Mark, and John Brian. He is the proud Grandfather to eight grandchildren.
