Having graduated from Seoul National University with a Bachelor's degree in 1974 and a Master's degree in metallurgical engineering in 1975, Dr. Choi earned a PhD in Materials Engineering from the University of Michigan in 1985. Dr. Choi holds the title of professor emeritus of the School of Materials Science and Engineering in the College of Engineering at Yeungnam University, having served in a wide range of positions over the course of 40 years. Additionally, he was certified in technology guidance in 1990.
From 1976 to 2014, Dr. Choi served as a professor for Yeugnam University at the School of Materials Engineering. He also served as dean for budget planning from 1999 to 2001, dean of the College of Engineering from 2002 to 2004, and vice president from 2011 to 2013. Outside of his career at the university, Dr. Choi held the title of outside director of LG Innotek from 2006 to 2011. In 2014, he served as the director of the Daekyung Institute for Regional Program Evaluation, and since 2014, he has acted as chief vice president of the Korean Federation of Science and Technology Societies in the Gyeongbuk province.
From 2009 to 2012, Dr. Choi has served the Korean government as a member of the Investment Body Management Evaluative Committee of the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy, as well as a member of Policy Advisory Committee of the Ministry of Knowledge Economy from 2009 to 2012. Furthermore, he was a member of the Policy Advisory Committee of Ministry of Education in 2007. Since 2010, he has also acted as technical adviser to Heesung Electronics LTD, and from 2008 to 2010, he was a committee member of Solar City at Daegu Metropolitan City. Additionally, Dr. Choi is a trustee of Daegu Hany University.
In 2006, he was awarded an honorary doctorate from Tashkent University of Information Technologies in Uzbekistan. Dr. Choi holds 14 patents, has published more than 120 research papers, and has authored seven textbooks in engineering, including "Principle Physical Chemistry," and Physical Chemistry." He has carried out more than 85 process development projects sponsored by government and national institutions and organizations within his industry.
Dr. Choi is a member of the Journal of Korean Sensors Society, the Journal of the Korean Institute of Surface Engineering, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, the Korean Sensors Society, and the Korean Institute of Metals and Materials. He has acted as the ombudsman of the Korea Institute for Advancement of Technology, as the editor of the Journal of the Korean Metallurgical Society from 1989 to 1991, and as director of the Journal of the Korean Sensors Society from 2010 to 2011.
Dr. Choi was awarded the Korean Presidential Medal in 2010, and received the Technology Development Award from the Director of the Small and Medium Business Administration in 2010. Yeungnam University also commended him with the 30 Years Employment Award in 2008. Additionally, he was featured in Marquis Who's Who in the World in 2016.
Dr. Choi has been married to Younghee Kim for 37 years. Together, they have two children. Their daughter, Stephanie Choi, is currently enrolled in a doctorate program at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and their son, Hanchul Choi, is enrolled in a Master's program at Columbia University. In his spare time, Dr. Choi enjoys playing Go.
