Robert Abzug is Audre and Bernard Rapoport Regents Chair of Jewish Studies and a leading historian of American society and culture. With more than 40 years of experience in higher education, Abzug has been a professor of history and American Studies at the University of Texas at Austin since 1978. Dr. Abzug holds a Bachelor of Arts degree, magna cum laude, from Harvard University and a PhD in history from the University of California, Berkeley. He has most recently served as the founding director of the Schusterman Center for Jewish Studies (2007-2017). Abzug taught at UCLA before coming to Texas and, in 1990-91, held the Eric Voegelin Visiting Professorship at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich. He is the recipient of several major teaching and advising awards at Texas.
Dr. Abzug's scholarship has focused on the formation of ethical and moral consciousness in American society. He is the author or editor of seven books in three major areas: social reform in antebellum America; America and the Holocaust; and, most recently, the relation of religion to psychotherapy in modern American culture. His publications in this area include a new edition of William James's The Varieties of Religious Experience (2012). Abzug's latest work, the first full-scale biography of the American psychoanalyst, Rollo May, will be published in Fall 2018 by Oxford University Press.
His major passions aside from professional pursuits include lifelong interests in music, photography, and art. His future projects will integrate these interests within historical and cultural settings.
