James L. Scales Named a Lifetime Achiever by Marquis Who's Who

The son of Dr. James Leonard and Ruth Marie Scales, Dr. Scales was born in Sacramento, CA. He is married to Dr. Donna Marie Coppola, with whom he has 3 children, James C., Steven, and Kevin Scales.

Dr. Scales studied at one of the world's most prestigious universities, Harvard College, and was honored as a Harvard Club of New Jersey Scholar in 1971. In 1974, he received an AB, cum laude in general studies, in Psychology. Following graduation, he enrolled in a combined academic program at UMDNJ-Rutgers Medical School and Rutgers University, where he received a MS in Physiology in 1978, and an MD in 1979. He completed a general surgery internship at UMDNJ-Rutgers Medical School in 1980, then returned to Rutgers University to pursue graduate studies in Physiology for 2 years.

Between 1982 and 1986, he was an orthopedic surgical resident at UMDNJ-NJ Medical School. During this period of time, Dr. Scales also served as a staff physician of the Medical Unit at the Meadowlands Sports Complex of the New Jersey Sports & Exposition Authority.

Upon completion of the orthopedic residency program in 1986, Dr. Scales entered practice at D'Ascoli Orthopedic Surgery, Sparta, NJ. Two years later, Dr. Scales founded and became President of Andover Orthopaedic Surgery & Sports Medicine Group, PA, Newton, NJ. In addition, he was Certified as a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery in 1988.

From 1992 through 1996, Dr. Scales was elected as Vice-Chief and Chief of Surgery at Newton Medical Center, Newton, NJ. In 1997, he served as a Volunteer Physician for the Sports Medicine Clinic at the US Olympic Training Center, Lake Placid, NY. From 1995 through 2005, Dr. Scales was an orthopedic consultant for the New Jersey Cardinals, a professional minor league baseball team.

Dr. Scales has also served administrative roles as Chairman of the Quality Performance Committee for the Garden State Orthopaedic Network, from 1996 through 2000, in addition to serving as a Medical Director of the North Jersey Center for Surgery in 2002 and 2012. He also serves as an online Clinical Peer Reviewer for CID Management in California.
Over the years, Dr. Scales has served the community by being a sideline physician for four high school football teams, in addition to serving as preceptor for physician assistant and nurse practitioner students from local universities. Dr. Scales has also authored over 25 orthopedic articles for local newspapers and magazines.

Dr. Scales is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. He is also a member of the American Medical Association, US Olympic Sports Medicine Society, Sussex County Medical Society, American Medical Society, New Jersey Medical Society, Pennsylvania Orthopedic Society, and New Jersey Orthopedic Society. As a high school student, in 1969, Dr. Scales was the New Jersey State High School Champion and New Jersey Amateur Athletic Union Champion in the 100 yard dash.

Dr. Scales has appeared in Marquis Who's Who publications, including the 7th and 9th editions of Who's Who in Science and Engineering. He also has been featured in the 4th through 8th editions of Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, as well as 59th, 60th, 61st, and 63rd editions of Who's Who in America and 21st through 25th editions of Who's Who in the World.
