A plasma physicist who works in space science and has been employed with Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) since 2011, Dr. Fuselier began his employment with the nonprofit research institute as a Program Director. He moved into the role of Director and is currently the Executive Director of the Space Science Directorate. The Directorate is home to approximately 140 scientists, engineers, and technicians who collectively develop space instrumentation for research in Astrophysics, Heliophysics, Planetary and Earth Science. At SwRI, he is Co-Investigator and sensor lead on the Interstellar Boundary Explorer (IBEX) mission, Co-I and lead for the Hot Plasma Composition Experiment (HPCA) on the Magnetospheric Multiscale Mission, Co-I and ion instrument lead on the Twin Rocket Investigation of Cusp Electrodynamics 2 (TRICE-2), and Lead US Co-I on the Rosetta orbiter spectrometer for ion and neutral analysis (ROSINA). In addition, he is an Adjoint professor at the University of Texas at San Antonio and conducts research with several graduate students in the Physics and Astronomy Department. Prior to his employment at SwRI, Dr. Fuselier was at Lockheed Martin Advanced Technology Center from 1986 to 2011. At the ATC, he was a lead investigator and senior manager supervising 45 scientists and engineers in the space physics department designing, constructing, testing and operating space instrumentation. He was the project manager for the IBEX-Lo sensor, which detects particles that helped scientists create the first map of the solar system's boundary. In addition, he was Co-I on the Imager for Magnetopause to Aurora Global Exploration (IMAGE) mission and project manager for hardware contributions to that mission as well as to the ROSINA instrumentation on Rosetta.
After earning a Bachelor of Science in Physics at the University of Southern California in 1981, a Master of Science in Physics and a PhD in Physics at the University of Iowa in 1983 and in 1984, respectively, Dr. Fuselier then became a postdoctoral researcher at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico. He remained in this capacity for two years before being taken onboard with Lockheed.
As a kid, Dr. Fuselier planned to study astronomy, but once he reached college, he fell in love with physics. When he entered graduate school, he narrowed in on space plasma physics and became further inspired to pursue a career in space science after taking a plasma physics course with Prof. Donald Gurnett and while working as a teaching assistant for the famous space scientist Prof. James Van Allen.
Dr. Fuselier's extensive research has been documented by him and published in a wide range of professional journals throughout his career. His scientific interests include analysis of space data from various missions including ISEE, ICE, AMPTE/CCE, POLAR, CRESS, CLUSTER, IMAGE, IBEX, ROSETTA, and MMS. He has received 7 NASA and ESA Group Achievement Awards for his work on NASA and ESA missions. He is a fellow of the American Geophysical Union, and the organization awarded him with a James B. Macelwane Young Investigator Award in 1995. He is the winner of the 2016 Hannes Alfven Medal from the European Geosciences Union. He has since been named to Who's Who in Science and Engineering's third edition. Married to Elizabeth M. Packer since 1982, Dr. Fuselier has two children and enjoys backpacking, astronomy, fishing, and swimming. He also has a working knowledge of the French and German languages.
