With years of commercial litigation experience, Mr. Komen maintains a private practice that provides legal counsel in the areas of estate planning, commercial real estate, probate business planning, and bankruptcy. He is widely regarded in the legal community and was selected as the recipient of a Merit Citation by the National Zeta Beta Tau Fraternity in 1977, 1991, 1992 and 2002, having also served as its national president and continuing to serve as a board member emeritus. Zeta Beta National Fraternity is the national organization governing over 70 undergraduate college fraternity units and with over 125,000 alumni members. In addition, Mr. Komen has been featured in a wide range of honors publications, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Law, Who's Who in the Midwest and Who's Who in the World.
Mr. Komen is admitted to practice in Missouri, as well as before the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri, Supreme Court of the United States, United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit and United States Federal Claims Court. In addition, he is a certified mediator through the Missouri Bar Association.
Prior to pursuing a legal career, Mr. Komen attended the University of Missouri, where he received a Bachelor of Arts in 1965 and a JD in 1970. He then joined Susman, Willer & Rimmel, later recognized as Susman, Schermer, Rimmel & Parker, where he served as an associate until becoming a partner of the firm. Beginning in 1980, Mr. Komen was recognized as a principal and vice president of Selner, Glaser, Komen, Berger & Galganski PC. Upon leaving this position in 1996, he became the principal manager of Komen, Berger & Cohen, L.C. Since 1999, Mr. Komen has maintained a private practice under the name Law Offices of Leonard Komen PC.
Throughout the course of his career, Mr. Komen has held numerous legal appointments. Between 1988 and 2005, he served as a trustee, examiner and receiver for the United States Bankruptcy Court. Mr. Komen has served as a member of the board of directors of Zeta Beta Tau Fraternity for more than three decades. Additionally, he is a charter member of and maintains an active membership in the World War II Museum in New Orleans, as well as the Cancer Support Community of Greater St. Louis, where he has held the position of treasurer and Board Chair. He also acted as President of the Creve Couer, Missouri Hockey Club for three years, as one of its youth hockey coaches, and is a member of the Creve Coeur Hockey Club Hall of Fame. Mr. Komen previously served the U.S. Army Reserve between 1968 and 1974 and has volunteered with the Missouri Veterans History Project beginning in 2012 by conducting career interviews of military veterans. He continues to serve as the director and president of the Messing Education Foundation providing undergraduate college financial assistance.
