The daughter of Robert and Edna Hardin, Ms. Cheung was born February 3, 1945, in Santa Rosa, CA. Ms. Cheung received a Bachelor's of Arts degree from California State University in 1966. She continued her studies at the University of San Francisco and received a Master's of Arts degree in 1981.
Ms. Cheung began her career as a teacher at St. Thomas Department of Education from 1967 to 1971. Between 1971 and 2001, she was a special education teacher at Sonoma Development Center in Eldridge, California, where she taught basic functional and educational skills to disabled students of all ages. Since 1996, Ms. Cheung has served as a co-administrator at Redwood Empire Chinese Association School.
Ms. Cheung served as the co-chair of Educational Services at the Professional Practice Group from 1989 through 1990, and then later from 1993 through 1994. She also has been the president of Poets of the Vineyard in 1998. Ms. Cheung was a member of the California Federation Chaparral Poets, where she served as the president from 1989 through 1991 and then again from 1993 through 1995.
Ms. Cheung is a member of the Ina Coolbrith Circle, where she served as the president of the organization between 1988 and 1990. Ms. Cheung is also a member of the World Congress of Poets, Redwood Empire Chinese Association, and United Poets Laureate International. Ms. Cheung is the current vice president of the Artists Embassy International.
Ms. Cheung has authored various creative works, including Welcome to the Inside in 1984 and Acorn to Embers in 1987. Her work has been acknowledged by various educational and creative organizations. Ms. Cheung received the Grand Cultures Medal from the World Congress of Cultures and Poetry in 1993, as well as Poetic Achievement Medal in 2000. She was awarded an Appreciation Award for Service by the Redwood Empire Chinese Association in 2000.
Ms. Cheung was also a recipient of the Gold Crown and the Laureate Women of Letters granted by United Poets Laureate International in 2004. She also received a Poetic Achievement Medal in 2005. Ms. Cheung was a recipient of Silver Pegasus Award in 1983, Arkansas Writers Conference Award in 1988, and Poetry of Vineyard Award in 1986, 1987, 2000, and 2001.
