Dr. Brueschke, a physician, researcher, and educator who has been working in his field for more than 50 years, has been able to combine his passion for science, technology, and health into his practice of medicine, medical and engineering research, and academic administration. Dr. Brueschke is a diplomate of the American Board of Family Practice and also certified in geriatrics and licensed to practice medicine in the state of Illinois.
After graduating from the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering, he went on to work for the Hughes Research and Development Laboratories in Culver City, California, for five years. There he specialized in magnetics and the effects of high vacuum on components. His last work there focused on the Surveyor spacecraft in 1961 to 1962, which landed on the moon in 1966. He left Hughes to attend medical school at Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
He was an intern at Germantown Dispensary and Hospital in Philadelphia from 1965 to 1966. After completing his medical training, he became a Captain in the United States Air Force at the Aerospace Medical Research Laboratories at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio for two years. Subsequently he practiced family medicine in California and then joined the Illinois Institute of Technology Research Institute in Chicago, Illinois, where, as Director of Medical Engineering Research, he worked on artificial internal organs, including powering the artificial heart, for seven years. He then joined Rush Medical College in Chicago, where he was Chairman of Family Medicine, and Professor of Physiology and Molecular Biophysics. He was also Program Director for the Rush-Christ Family Practice Residency Program for 17 years. He subsequently became Dean of Rush Medical College for six years. He retired as Dean in 2000. He is currently the Distinguished Professor of Medicine at Rush Medical College at Rush University in Chicago.
Dr. Brueschke spent a portion of his career as trustee and vice president of medical and academic affairs at Anchor HMO and later as trustee of Synergon Health Systems, all while maintaining his full-time appointments at Rush Medical Center. Throughout his career, he also served on a number of committees and board of directors, served as medical director for Chicago Board of Health West Side Hypertension Center, editor-in-chief for Disease-a-Month, associate editor for Primary Cardiology, consultant editor for family practice of Hospital Medicine, and medical editor for World Book/Rush Presbyterian St. Luke's/Medical Encyclopedia. He has two United States patents issued and has published numerous papers in engineering, medical and scientific literature. He also served as an associate editor and writer for The Antique Wireless Association Review.
Active on several professional organizations, such as the American Medical Association, the Chicago Medical Society, and the International Society for Artificial Internal Organs, Dr. Brueschke is also a fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians, a Master Mason, and a member of Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, where he briefly served as chairman of the engineering in medicine and biology group. He is a current holder of the Extra Class amateur radio license, call sign KC9ACE.
As a member of the American Occupational Medical Center, Dr. Brueschke received a Physician's Recognition Award three times, in 1969, 1972, and 1975. He was also named Physician Teacher of the Year by the Illinois Academy of Family Physicians in 1988 and Alumni of the Year by Temple University Medical School in 1996. He has also been included in more than 80 editions of Who's Who, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the World, and Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare.
