MANSFIELD CENTER, CT, September 28, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Michael Turvey has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Michael T. Turvey ranks among the world's most accomplished research scientists in the field of psychology. He is widely known in the present era for his pioneering work in the ecological approach to perception (focusing on laws and principles at the scale of organisms and their environments) and in applying dynamical systems theory to the coordination and control of movement. In an earlier era (1960s, 1970s) he was widely known for his inquiries into human short-term and iconic memory conducted in the computation-oriented information-processing perspective. This work was awarded with a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1973 and the first American Psychological Association Early Career Award in 1974.
Dr. Turvey is a Board of Trustees' Distinguished Professor (Emeritus) at the University of Connecticut and co-founder of the University's Center for the Ecological Study of Perception and Action (CESPA). He is also a Senior Scientist (Emeritus) at the Haskins Laboratories, a multidisciplinary community of investigators conducting basic research on spoken and written language. His Haskins related work was directed primarily at the so-called "shallow" writing systems of Serbia and Croatia: each letter's optical form is unique and specific to its phonetic form.
Dr. Turvey's primary research interests have included haptic (alias active touch) and visual perceptual systems, interlimb coordination, postural control, and the phonological basis of visual word recognition. With colleagues at CESPA and Haskins he carried out seminal work in extending principles of self-organization to biological movement. One of the major contemporary perspectives on movement and its perceptual control owes much to Turvey's synthesis in the 1970s of the works of the Russian physiologist Nikolai Bernstein and the American perceptual psychologist James Gibson.
Born in England, Turvey graduated from Loughborough College (now Loughborough University) with First Class Honors in 1963 and went on to Ohio State University, where he earned an MA in kinesiology (1964) and a Ph.D. in experimental and physiological psychology (1967). He has been the recipient of many awards and honors, including Guggenheim and Cattell Fellowships, the Early Career Award from the American Psychological Association (APA), Fellow of the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences, APA Distinguished Scientist Lecturer, Honorary Doctorates from the Vrije Universiteit (Amsterdam) and the University of South Florida, the Bernstein Prize in Motor Control, and the 2011 Lifetime Achievement Award from the Society of Experimental Psychologists. He served as president of the International Society for Motor Control from 2007 to 2010. His excellence as a teacher (most particularly of undergraduates) has been recognized throughout his career by university-level awards.
Dr. Turvey has authored/co-authored 410 published works (journal articles, books, and book chapters). He is co-author of "Information, Natural Law and the Self-Assembly of Rhythmic Movement" (1987), co-editor of "Dexterity and Its Development" (1996), and author of "Lectures on perception: An ecological perspective" (in press). He has served on the editorial boards of the Journal of Experimental Psychology, the Journal of Motor Behavior, Ecological Psychology, Human Movement Science, and Motor Control. He has delivered more than 150 colloquia and keynote addresses worldwide. His current goal is authoring the complement of "Lectures on perception", namely "Lectures on action: An ecological perspective". Perhaps his most notable achievement has been that of major advisor to 48 Ph.Ds (with the first in 1973, and the last in 2008).
