Chemistry is occasionally the subject of her work, often the inspiration, and always the method or means of its creation. She is most proud of the many hours of research and experimentation she has devoted to the chemical process, which has allowed her to control and manipulate chemicals in order to create truly unique and expressive works of art. While biology and the environment have influenced the subject of these works, it is the chemical interactions that give full expressions to the images.
Ms. Safren is best known for developing an artistic process that involves copper, chemicals and extreme heat. As light hits the copper it cascades into a burst of fiery color and then, just as suddenly, tapers off into cool serenity. Changes in mood and thought occur as the light shifts the color rhapsodically. When the light dims or strikes at certain angles, the color becomes saturated, majestic and even reverential. Shifting light on the copper surface and viewer movement are the kinesthetic forces altering perception, allowing onlookers to discover new and interesting observations each time they view the work. Ms. Safren's work is currently on display in various venues throughout the United States.
Throughout the course of her career, Ms. Safren has had her worked displayed in more than 200 juried shows over the course of several decades, including "Responding to Climate Change," which was held at the Korean Institute of Chemical Technology in 2017. She has been featured at 16 solo shows to date, including "Early works of Cheryl Safren" at MorrisArts Center in Morristown, NJ, "Alchemy" at Adelphi University in Garden City, NY and "Percolations" at the Great Neck Art Center in Great Neck, NY. Her work has been reviewed at least 30 times in various professional publications, including Chemical and Engineering News, Artvoices Magazine, 11:11 Magazine, Studio Visit, and Long Island Pulse. In addition, Ms. Safren has been featured in a wide range of honors publications, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who of American Women and Who's Who in the World.
Prior to pursuing a career in fine arts education, Ms. Safren attended the Pratt Institute, where she completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1973. She later attended Hofstra University, where she received a Master of Science in 1996. She has been a certified New York State art teacher since 1997 and has taught art in various institutions throughout New York.
The artist's work has been commissioned and permanently installed in eight public art spaces including the James L. Sorenson Molecular Biotechnology Research Center at the University of Utah, the Psychology Building at Florida State and the Tallyn Reach Municipal Building in Aurora, Colorado.
