An Academic Gynecologist and Oncologist, Dr. Herbst has been working in the field for more than 50 years, and currently serves as a Distinguished Professor Emeritus at the University of Chicago, a position he has held since 2005. Dr. Herbst began his career upon completing an AB magna cum laude at Harvard College in 1953, followed by an MD cum laude at Harvard Medical School in 1959, obtained after spending two years as a line officer in the U.S. Navy 1953 to 1955. After finishing his internship and residency at Massachusetts General Hospital and serving as a resident in obstetrics-gynecology at Boston Hospital for Women, he began a very successful career in both medicine and higher education. He and his colleagues in 1971 published a landmark paper describing the rare occurrence of vaginal cancer in young women whose mothers had taken an estrogen, diethylstilbestrol, during their pregnancy. This led to a new field of investigation of carcinogenesis in humans as a result of a medication taken during pregnancy.
Teaching as an Associate Professor of Obstetrics-Gynecology at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard University Medical School for just over a decade, Dr. Herbst took a major professional leap at the University of Chicago as Chairman and Joseph B. DeLee Professor of Obstetrics-Gynecology from 1976 to 1983 and later as a Joseph B. DeLee Distinguished Service Professor from 1984 to 2002. Dr. Herbst spent 25 years in the role of Chairman of the Department of Obstetrics-Gynecology at Chicago Lying in Hospital until 2001. He also spent a year as Chairman of the Executive Committee at the University of Chicago Hospitals and Clinics in 1980.
Dr. Herbst is a fellow and honorary member of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, a member of the National Academy of Science, and a member and former President of the American Gynecological and Obstetrics Society. He has been a Distinguished Professor Emeritus of the University of Chicago since 2003. The author of several books, including "Comprehensive Gynecology" and "Yearbook of Obstetrics, Gynecology," Dr. Herbst has contributed 186 publications to professional journals to date. Currently he is Chair of the Dean's Advisory Board for the College of Science at the University of Arizona, a position he has held since 2006.
A Diplomate of the American Board of Obstetrics-Gynecology, where he previously served on the board of directors and as Director of the division of gynecological oncology, Dr. Herbst is also certified for special competence in gynecology/oncology through the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. In 2001, Dr. Herbst received an honorary DSc from Northeast Ohio University. Named to dozens of editions of Who' Who, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the World, Who's Who in the Midwest, and Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, he is married to Lee Ginsburg, has two children (Elizabeth Herbst Brady (7/26/1961); Arthur L. Herbst, Jr. (6/9/1963), and four grandchildren (Marina Isabella Herbst (9/27/1995); Paula Elizabeth Herbst (6/20/1997); Maggie Lee Brady (11/2/1998); Patrick Arthur Brady (11/2/1998).
