For many years, Dr. Basturk has honed her expertise in the field through her role as a pathologist with Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, one of the world's top cancer research centers. Trained in oncologic and gastrointestinal pathology, she diagnoses a variety of conditions, including pancreas, gallbladder, bile duct, liver, esophagus, stomach, colon, appendix, and rectum cancers as well as neuroendocrine neoplasms in her current position.
A graduate of Ege University Medical School, Dr. Basturk holds an MD. Additionally, she pursued residencies and fellowships through NYU Langone Medical Center, the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, and Cornell University Weill Medical College, and maintains board certifications in anatomic and clinical pathology.
Her primary interest is pancreaticobiliary diseases and her research focuses on pancreas and gallbladder neoplasms, which includes not only practical studies that can help practicing pathologists better diagnose and classify these tumors but also novel observations about tumor biology and genomic correlations. Throughout her career thus far, she has contributed her extensive breadth of knowledge to a number of articles and her work has been featured in a number of journals, including Modern Pathology, The American Journal of Surgical Pathology, and The Annals of Surgery, as well as in the quintessential textbooks of pathology and surgery, including Odze and Goldblum's Surgical Pathology of the GI Tract, Liver, Biliary Tract, and Pancreas, Sternberg's Diagnostic Surgical Pathology, and Blumgart's Surgery of the Liver, Biliary Tract and Pancreas. Dr. Basturk is also routinely invited to give lectures on the most prestigious national and international platforms in the fields of pathology, surgery and oncology. Additionally, she is a member of the Education Committee of the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology, the ultimate Society of academic pathologists with over 10,000 members world-wide, and the consummate source of continuing medical education (CME) for pathologists. Looking toward the future, Dr. Basturk hopes to further investigate pancreas and gallbladder neoplasms from the clinical, morphological and molecular perspectives.
