A widely regarded cardiologist and medical educator, Dr. Whayne has served as a professor of medicine in the division of cardiovascular medicine with the Gill Heart & Vascular Institute at the University of Kentucky for nearly 20 years. Certified in cardiovascular disease through the American Board of Internal Medicine, his areas of focus include cardiovascular medicine with major interests in the aggressive treatment of coronary atherosclerosis, blood lipid disorders, and the reduction of cardiovascular risk factors. Dr. Whayne's research interests include lipoprotein metabolism and innovative cardiovascular medical therapies.
Prior to pursuing a career in medicine, Dr. Whayne attended the University of Pennsylvania, where he received a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry in 1959 and an MD in 1963. He completed an internship and residency at The New York Hospital between 1963 and 1966, as well as a fellowship in cardiovascular disease at the Cardiovascular Research Institute and University of Toronto between 1966 and 1970. Dr. Whayne also completed a PhD in Biochemistry at the University of California in 1970.
Dr. Whayne entered academia in 1970 when he accepted a position as an assistant professor of medicine with The Ohio State University. Two years later, he joined the University of Oklahoma as an associate professor of medicine. Dr. Whayne held this position until 1977, when he joined the University of Kentucky as a clinical professor of medicine, a role he filled for more than two decades before he was promoted to the position of professor of medicine in the division of cardiovascular medicine in 1998. He also maintained a private medical practice during this time.
Throughout the course of his career, Dr. Whayne has published more than 150 medical articles, which include 18 in the Spanish language with more than 100 Medline-listed publications in PubMed. In addition, he has delivered more than 70 international presentations in Spanish in Spanish-speaking countries. Since 2009, Dr. Whayne has been named among the Best Doctors in America, and was previously named Man of the Year by the Oklahoma Heart Association. He was awarded the Research Achievement Award of the International College of Angiology in Vienna, Austria in September 2017.
Dr. Whayne is a recognized fellow with the American College of Physicians of Philadelphia, American College of Cardiology and American College of Physicians, as well as several councils through the American Heart Association, including the Council on Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology, and Council on Clinical Cardiology. In an effort to remain aware of developments in the field of medicine, he maintains active involvement with the Lexington Medical Society, Kentucky State Medical Association, and American Medical Association, among others. Dr. Whayne actively supports the Rotary Club of Lexington, Vesper Boat Club of Philadelphia, University of Pennsylvania Rowing, University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, University of Kentucky Department of Hispanic Studies, and Gill Heart & Vascular Institute.
Dr. Whayne has been featured in a wide range of honors publications, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, and Who's Who in the World.
