Graduating with a MD from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine in 1984, Dr. Hutchinson continued his education at The Johns Hopkins University, from which he received a Master of Public Health in 1990. He also holds a Bachelor of Science from Xavier University, and he is licensed to practice medicine in California and Georgia. During his academic career, he served as a member of Delta Omega, Alpha Omega Alpha, and Sigma Pi Sigma. Dr. Hutchinson is also recognized a registered hazardous substances professional as well as a diplomate in occupational medicine by the American Board of Preventive Medicine.
For almost 25 years, Dr. Hutchinson has served as the president of HLM Consultants in Atlanta. Beginning his career as a chemist for the Environmental Protection Agency in 1982, he has also served as an adjunct associate professor of environmental and occupational health at Emory University School of Public Health since 1990. He previously held the position of medical officer of the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry from 1986 to 1992 as well as occupational medicine resident at Emory University from 1992 to 1993. From 1984 to 1985, he was a resident in internal medicine at Wright State University shortly after serving in the Center for Disease Control's Visiting Program Staff Fellowship at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health.
Outside of his career, Dr. Hutchinson served as an on-site peer reviewer of the Texas Air Control Board in Galveston from 1987 to 1988. He has also been a member of the Emory University Academic Advisory Council on Occupational and Environmental Health since 1989. Since 1997, he has served as the vice president and chief medical officer of the International Institute for Environmental Risk Management at the University of Southwest Texas. Dr. Hutchinson also served his community as an instructor for the Medical College Admission Test Preparation Program for Minority Students at Atlanta University from 1987 to 1990. Additionally, he also serves as a member of the National Environmental Health Association.
Dr. Hutchinson has received multiple awards and commendations for his contributions to his field. The Department of Health and Human Services awarded him with the Special Act or Service Award in 1992. He was also the recipient of the Xavier University Achievement and National Merit Scholarship and the Xavier Biology Prize. He has been featured in numerous editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, and Who's Who in the World.
The son of Joseph Edward and Evelyn Hutchinson, Dr. Hutchinson has been married to Stephanie Ellyn Leffingwell for 28 years. In his spare time, he enjoys studying oriental philosophy.
