A well-known professor at the University of Technology and Economy since 2001, Dr. Lazar has been a devoted teacher and mentor for many years. He has tutored several students while preparing for their PhD and MSc theses, and has been instrumental in so many students' lives. Dr. Lazar has also been serving as a scientific advisor and as the head of nuclear chemistry in the department of nuclear analysis as part of the Mossbauer spectroscopy team, Centre for Energy Research, at Hungarian Academy of Sciences, since the Centre's formation in 2012.
The Centre for Energy Research was established on the basis of two former independent institutions, the Institute of Isotopes and the KFKI Atomic Energy Research Institute and is part of the research network of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. Its mission is to perform research and development in the field of nuclear science and technology for facilitating the adoption and the safe use of nuclear technology in Hungary, as well as to participate in international research efforts aiming at the establishing a new generation of nuclear power plants and closing the fuel cycle, and to study the interaction of radiation with matter. Furthermore, the Centre focuses on isotope and nuclear chemistry, chemical analysis by nuclear methods, radiography, radiation chemistry, radiation protection and nuclear security, surface chemistry and renewable energy research.
Dr. Lazar first started at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in 1971 as a chemist in the central research institute for physics. He then completed his research fellowship at the Academy from 1979 to 1982, and served as deputy directory in the institute of isotopes from 1999 to 2011. His extensive background also included a postdoctoral fellowship at Northeastern University in Boston and at the Institut de Recherches sur la Catalyse, CNRS, in Villeurbanne, France. Furthermore, he served as the head of the department of catalysis and tracer studies, head of the department of application of radioisotopes, and as head of the Mossbauer Laboratory for more than 30 years.
In August 2008, Dr. Lazar organized and co-chaired the International Symposium on the Industrial Applications of the Mossbauer Effect, which was held in Budapest from the 17th to the 22nd. He also served as a grants coordinator several times between 1993 and 2013, served as an international-bilateral Hungarian coordinator on three occasions, and was a project coordinator, participant, and team coordinator on various projects. He remains active as a member of the Mossbauer Century Club, the American Chemical Society, the Hungarian Chemical Society, the Committee for Radiochemistry, and the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.
The author and co-author of more than 220 publications in his field, Dr. Lazar holds a Master of Science in Chemistry from Eotvos University since 1971 and a PhD from the Hungarian Academy of Sciences since 1992. Married to Veronika Kardi with two children and two grandchildren, Dr. Lazar enjoys time well spent with his family, as well as doing outdoor activities like cycling, tennis, and rowing.
