A Moncrief-O'Donnell endowed chair and professor of electrical engineering at the University of Texas at Arlington, Dr. Lewis also serves as the head of the Advanced Controls and Sensors Group since 1990. He has brought a wealth of expertise with him to the ever-growing institution, having previously taught as a graduate research assistant, assistant professor, associate professor, and full professor at Georgia Institute of Technology for 13 years. Furthermore, he has served as an instructor at Florida Junior College for a short time.
In the field, Dr. Lewis spent time with Texas Nuclear Company in Austin, with the Colonia Pipeline Company in Atlanta as a microprocessor design technician, and with Lockheed Advanced Research Organization doing consulting work in aircraft adaptive controls during the mid-1980s. He has also consulted four various other organizations between 1982 and 2015.
During his 27 years at UTA, Dr. Lewis has developed many undergraduate and graduate level courses, including Control Systems Capstone Design Project for undergraduates as well as Robot Dynamics and Control, Nonlinear and Adaptive Control, Kalman Filtering, Intelligent, Fuzzy, Neutral Control, Computer Methods in Control Systems Design, and Distributed Decision and Cooperative Control on Graphics for graduates. Some of Dr. Lewis' achievements have included research in intelligent controls, robotics, manufacturing, and systems engineering. Some of his current interests include intelligent control, distributed cooperative control on graphs, nonlinear systems, reinforcement learning, process control, condition-based maintenance, and neurobiological systems.
In addition to his full-time work, Dr. Lewis has served as an invited speaker and keynote speaker nearly 100 times for various organizations and has hosted more than 50 seminars on various topics. He was a visiting professor at Deomcritus University in Greece, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Chinese University of Hong Kong, City University of Hong Kong, National University of Singapore, and Nanyang Technological University of Singapore. Additionally, he was a guest consulting professor at Shanghai Jiao Tong University and South Carolina University of Technology.
Recognized for his years in academia, he was recognized as a University Distinguished Scholar Professor by UTA, Texas Regents Outstanding Teacher, High Rank Foreign Professor by Chongqing University in China, and Distinguished Professor by Northeastern University in Shenyang, China. He received nearly 100 grants and contracts for his research by organizations like the National Science Foundation, and has previously received such accolades of a Terman Award by the American Society of Engineering Education, an Excellence in Teaching Award by Eta Kappa Nu, and a Gabor Award by the Institute of Neurological Network Society. He was also named Distinguished Speaker at the 10th Anniversary Ceremony of the engineering faculty of Chinese University of Hong Kong, among many others. He holds roughly a dozen patents and patent applications in his field as well.
A certified chartered engineer through the Engineering Council of the UK and a registered professional engineer through the Engineering Council of Texas, Dr. Lewis first studied in Chile and Gordonstoun School in Scotland. He then received a Bachelor of Arts in Physics and Electrical Engineering as well as a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering at Rice University. Dr. Lewis has also served six in the U.S. Navy as a navigator and division officer aboard the frigate USS Trippe (FF-1075) as well as an executive officer and acting commanding officer aboard the USS Salinan (ATF-161) before retiring as a lieutenant in 1977. He then completed a Master of Science in Aerospace Systems at the University of West Florida and a PhD in Electrical Engineering at Georgia University of Technology.
A Thomas Reuters web of science highly cited researcher, Dr. Lewis has authored 29 books, 59 book chapters, more than 350 journal papers, 30 reprint volumes/journal special issues, and over 400 full referred and published conference papers. He also served as editor, editor-in-chief, and on the editorial board for several journals.
A fellow, member, and senior member of a host of organizations throughout his career, Dr. Lewis is currently active as a fellow of the National Academy of Inventors, the International Federation of Automatic Control, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and the Institute of Measurement and Control of the UK. He also served on various committees and boards for the IEEE and other organizations, and is a founding member of the board of governors of the Mediterranean Control Association. Born in Würzburg, Germany, Dr. Lewis was recently awarded with an American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Intelligent Systems Award in 2016 and an IEEE Computational Intelligence Society Neural Networks Pioneer Award in 2012.
