Dr. Ryu graduated from Stuttgart University's Institute of Geology and Paleontology in Germany with a Doctor of Science in 1990 and a Diploma in Geology in 1988. He also received a Bachelor of Science in Geology from Yonsei University in the Republic of Korea in 1980. For more than 25 years, Dr. Ryu has served as the senior and principal researcher in the Petroleum and Marine Resources Research Division of the Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources (KIGAM). Additionally, he has served the organization as the principal researcher of the Gas Hydrate Department since 2011.
Dr. Ryu previously held the position of chief scientist of the Second Ulleung Basin Gas Hydrate Drilling Expedition (UBGH2) in 2010. He also acted as the director of the Gas Hydrate Department from 2008 to 2011, and the Petroleum Geology Department from 2001 to 2003. Early in his career with the company, he held the title of project manager in the study on gas hydrate, serving in this position from 1996 until 2004.
Dr. Ryu has published numerous articles in scientific journals and chapters in books on topics in petroleum geology. His contributions were recognized with a Letter of Commendation awarded by the Governor of the Jeollabuk-do Province in the Republic of Korea. He has also been featured in Who's Who in Asia and numerous editions of Who's Who in the World.
