A researcher and physics professor who was named an Eberly Distinguished Professor in 1992, Dr. Seehra spent 47 years as a faculty member at West Virginia University, working his way up from assistant professor of physics to full professor until officially retiring in August 2016. Receiving his early education in India, he first obtained a Bachelor's degree at Punjab University and a Master's degree at Aligah Muslim University while teaching as an instructor of chemistry at Arya College in Nawanshahr, India, as well as a lecturer of physics at Jain College in Ambala City, India. Once Dr. Seehra had relocated to the U.S. for more opportunities, he was accepted to study at the University of Rochester in New York, where he completed a PhD in 1969, the same year he was taken on board to teach at West Virginia University.
Leading an amazing career at the West Virginia University, much of Dr. Seehra's focus has been in magnetic, dialectic, and nanomaterials and their applications. He taught more than a dozen courses at the 100, 200, 200, and 400 level, including Engineering Physics, Thermodynamics, Classical Mechanics, Quantum Mechanics, Modern Physics, Modern Lab, Introductory Solid-State Physics, Phases Transitions, X-ray Diffraction, Magnetism and Magnetic Resonance. He also guided the research of 65 graduate and postdoctoral students by using funds that were provided with more than 50 research grants between 1971 and 2016. Many of his students have gone on to win national research awards, gain successful faculty positions themselves, and gain some substantial roles within the industry.

Furthermore, Dr. Seehra served on various editorial boards for several academic journals, such as the Journal of Materials and the Advances in Condensed Matter Physics. Recently, he edited two books, one on magnetic spinels and one on nano-structured materials, both of which were published by InTech Publishers. In 1985, he received an Outstanding Research Award by West Virginia's college of arts and sciences. Earlier in his career, he received a research fellow by A.P. Sloan Foundation between the years of 1973 and 1975 and a summer fellow by ORAU for 1976, 1977, 1984, and 1985. In 2012, Dr. Seehra established an endowment for the Seehra Research Award, which is now given annually to one to two graduate students who have published high quality research papers in peer-reviewed journals. In 2016, Dr. Seehra established an endowment for the Seehra Lecture Fund. This supports an annual lecture coordinated by the WVU Center for Women's Studies in the area of professional development of women graduate students and researchers.
Dr. Seehra is a fellow of the American Physical Society since 1984 and the Institute of Physics in the UK since 2001. He has given countless presentations over the course of his career, some of which were for professional meetings, including the Annual March Meeting and the American Physical Society, as well as at conferences on magnetism, and magnetic materials.
Named in various editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, and Who's Who in the World, Dr. Seehra received an Outstanding Referee Award granted by the American Physical Society in 2010. Five years later, Dr. Seehra received a Buswell Award for advancing the careers of women at West Virginia University. Married since 1963 to wife Harbhajan Kaur, Dr. Seehra has two children.
