A professor of finance at New York University for the past 45 years, Dr. Elton began his career at NYU in 1965 as an assistant professor, and later as an associate professor. Promoted to full professor in 1972, Dr. Elton simultaneously served as a senior researcher for the International Institute of Management of Berlin. Dr. Elton was later named a Nomora professor of finance at New York University's Leonard N. Stern School of Business during the 1986 academic school year.
Recognizing his superior strengths in both mathematics and physics while pursuing his undergraduate degree, Dr. Elton furthered his education after the completion of his BA in Mathematics and Physics at Ohio Wesleyan University with an MS in Industrial Administration at Carnegie Mellon University in 1965. Six years later, he also completed his PhD in Industrial Administration.
Well-versed in all areas of finance, but best known for his expertise in asset allocation, Dr. Elton has also served as a portfolio theory and investment management consultant for many major financial institutions in Asia, Europe, and the U.S. His research has led to him authoring several books in the field, including: "Finance as a Dynamic Process" in 1974, "International Capital Markets" in 1975, "Portfolio Theory - 25 Years After" in 1979, and "Modern Portfolio Theory" in 2010. He has also co-authored several books and has contributed more than 110 articles to professional journals throughout his career. He also serves as an associate editor for the Journal of Banking and Finance since 1987, and is a former associate editor of Management Science as well as former editor of the Journal of Finance.
A fellow of the Institute for Quantitative Analysts and both a fellow and former president of the American Finance Association, Dr. Elton has received several awards for his work, including a Graham Dodd Award for Research in Investments and a James Verdin Lifetime Achievement Award by the Financial Analyst Federation. Dr. Elton has also been named a Distinguished Scholar by the Eastern Finance Association. Furthermore, he has been included in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, and Who's Who in the East.
A life master bridge player, Dr. Elton enjoys scuba diving, skiing, and motorcycling as well. He has been married to Diane Olivia Ramsey since 1963, and has four children.
