Drawing upon more than 45 years of professional experience, Dr. Watkins serves as an Associate Professor, Affiliate Faculty in the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health in the University of South Florida College of Public Health, and Affiliate Assistant Professor University of South Florida Morsani College of Medicine. Dr. Watkins has had the privilege of contributing a chapter to Hamilton & Hardy's Industrial Toxicology, Sixth Edition edited by Raymond D Harbison. She is a recognized expert in the areas of disability evaluations, Fitness for Duty Determinations and Independent Medical Examinations, and has served as a consultant in her fields of focus for more than a decade. Throughout the course of her career, Dr. Watkins has been featured in a wide range of honors publications, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the Midwest, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, and Who's Who of American Women. She was also selected for inclusion in the sixth, seventh and eighth editions of Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, 11th edition of Who's Who in Science and Engineering, and second edition of Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America.
Inspired by a lifelong desire to work in the medical industry, Dr. Watkins attended West Liberty State College, where she received a Bachelor of Science in 1965. She went on to receive Certificate of Graduate Physical Therapist through The Ohio State University in 1966. In addition, Dr. Watkins completed a DO at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1972. After completing a rotating Osteopathic Internship she completed a year of residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Watkins was recognized as Diplomat American Board of Emergency Medicine from 1983 to 1993. She has been a Diplomat of the American Board of Preventative Medicine in Occupational and Environmental Medicine since 1993. She is a Fellow of the American Board of Preventive Medicine, American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, and the International Academy of Independent Medical Evaluators.
For nearly two decades, Dr. Watkins served as an emergency osteopathic physician with various medical institutions located throughout the United States, including Cooper Medical Center, Shore Memorial Hospital, St. Francis Hospital, and Mercy Hospital and Medical Center. During this time, she attended the University of Illinois, where she received a Master of Health Professions Education in 1986 and a Master of Public Health in 1989. She completed residency in Occupational and Preventative Medicine through the University of Illinois, Great Lakes ERC between 1988 and 1990.
Dr. Watkins served as the president of the Florida Association of Occupational and Environmental Medicine; a part of the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine from 1999 to 2001. Previously, she served as the corporate medical director of occupational health service with the University Community Hospital in Tampa, Florida from 1992 to 2006.
