Philip Lawrence Sherrod Named a Lifetime Achiever by Marquis Who's Who

    NEW YORK, NY, October 10, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to name Philip Lawrence Sherrod a Lifetime Achiever. An accomplished street painter, composer, and poet, Mr. Sherrod spent his entire career teaching in the Northeastern United States. In the early 1970s, he taught for the Morristown Art Association in NJ for several years before accepting a long-term position at the NJ Center for Visual Arts, from 1977 to 2003. During the majority of his 26 year span, he also taught at the Art Students League in New York, NY, a role he held from 1984 to 2009. Mr. Sherrod also worked for the National Academy of Design School of Fine Arts throughout the mid-to-late 1990s, as well as during the 2005 academic school year. Furthermore, Mr. Sherrod served as a master teacher for the Board Community Center in South Orange, NJ until 2017.

Born in Paul's Valley, Oklahoma, in 1935, Mr. Sherrod is best known for his vibrant use of color. He has produced hundreds of paintings of city streets, including representations of Coney Island and Times Square in Manhattan, portraits of babies and adults, nudes, animals, and various still objects. Expressed in raw and earthy forms via painting and etchings, Mr. Sherrod is a very unique and talented artist of his time.

Completing a Bachelor of Science in Zoology and a Bachelor of Arts in Painting at Oklahoma State University before continuing his postgraduate studies at the Art Students League, Jacques Seligman College, and Carroll Reese Museum, Mr. Sherrod's work has been viewed and enjoyed by millions. In addition to his work being features in theaters and movies, Mr. Sherrod's art has been in public and private collections, corporate collections, and museum collections around the world. Corporate collections have included ABC, Paramount Pictures Productions, INA Corporation, and Custom Communication Systems, while museum collections have include the Smithsonian Institute, Springfield Museum of Fine Art, the National Academy of Design Museum, the Herbert Johnson Museum at Cornell University, and the Rose Art Museum at Brandeis University. His hundreds of exhibitions, which date back to 1966, have been shown in galleries all across New York City, as well as in NJ, Nebraska, Boston, San Diego, and Rome, Italy.

In 1977, Mr. Sherrod founded Street Painters in New York, NY. It is a group of seven men and one woman who paint on location in New York City, and whom have enjoyed more than 94 exhibitions to date. Mr. Sherrod is also a member of the Arts Student League, the Federation of Modern Painters and Sculptors, the National Academy of Design Museum, and the Treasured Poems of America. Additionally, he has been known for having spoken publicly for numerous organizations, universities, and institutions at various seminars and lectures.

A published poet, Mr. Sherrod has written dozens of poems, including "Perspective," "Journey Through Life," "Freedom," "Mirrors of The Mind," and "Dreams of Yesterday" in various publications. For his work, Mr. Sherrod has been included in countless periodicals, such as the American Biographical Institute, The Encyclopedia of Living Artists, and the Directory of Distinguished Americans. He has been written up in newspapers and magazines across the world, such as the Penthouse Magazine for his erotic artwork, The N.Y. Sun, and Korea Times.
A father of one, Mr. Sherrod is a fellow of the American Academy in Rome. He received a Creative Artists Public Service grant in 1980, an Adolphe/Esther Gottlieb Foundation grant in 1981, 1988, 1996, and 2006, a National Education Association grant in 1982, an American Academy in Rome grant from 1985 to 1986, and The Pollack-Krasner Foundation, Inc. grant in 1989. He is also a three-time recipient of a Purchase Award by the American Academy of Arts and Letters and a two-time recipient of a Childe Hassam Purchase Award by the Prixe de Roma. He has been named in close to 20 editions of Who's Who for his work, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the East, and Who's Who in the World.
