A composer and certified music educator in the state of Ohio who has taught both elementary aged and college level students, Ms. Hergo has been an independent piano teacher in the town of Dayton since 1964. Through her rewarding and prolific career, Ms. Hergo has loved the opportunity to blend her love of teaching with music. But what Ms. Hergo has been most proud of throughout her career has been her ability to successfully compose and publish for her piano students.
After completing a Bachelor of Music at the University of Dayton in 1968, Ms. Hergo taught kindergarten in Englewood, Ohio, for several years and became an elementary teacher in Dayton after earning a Bachelor of Science in Music Education from the University of Dayton in 1975. She earned Master of Music degree from Wright State University in 1980 and accompanied ballet and modern dance classes at Sinclair Community College in Dayton. She also spent time as a piano soloist for the Dayton Philharmonic Designer Show House during the mid 1980s. Ms. Hergo was an adjudicator for the Junior Club Music Festivals from 1989 to 2012, halted only by two hip replacements.
Recognized as a composer for the book, "Five Finger Frolics" in 1988 and "Keyboard Confections" in 1992, Ms. Hergo also composed sheet music for "Gems on the Lake" in 1991, and won the duet composition contest with the Ohio Music Teachers Association. Ms. Hergo also composed "Skeleton Skedaddle" in 1993, earning an Honorable Mention Award for a composition contest, as well as several other awards other pieces she had written over the years. Most recently, Ms. Hergo received a 2017 1st Place Award for piano solo for "Snow Swirls" by the Ohio Federation of Music Clubs. Additionally, she authored "Piano Tid Bits (for Beginners)" in 2017 and "Summer Scenes (for Intermediates)", also in 2017, published by Nouvelle Publishing.
Composing and performing for her church, Ms. Hergo loves to give back to her community. Active in a number of organizations, they include the American Society of Composers, the Music Teachers National Association, the Ohio Music Teachers Association, the Junior Club, the Dayton Music Club, and Sigma Alpha Iota. Enjoying her down time drawing, sewing, reading, flower gardening, and doing embroidery, Ms. Hergo has been featured in approximately 30 editions of Who's Who, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the World, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who of American Women. Looking to the future, Ms. Hergo will be performing her award-winning piano solo "Snow Swirls" at both the National and State Conventions of Federation of Music Clubs in 2017 and 2018.
