Commencing her coaching career at the university in 1980, she continued to teach in the classroom until 2004.

Dr. Curtis is a lifetime member of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, and Recreation, Delta Psi Kappa, and the Abilene Women's Bowling Association, where she was named Bowler of the Year in 1967. She is also a member of the Texas Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance and Phi Lambda Theta. From 1971 to 1979, she also served as treasurer of the Texas Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women.

Furthermore, she authored two manuals: "Manual for Bowling Teachers at Abilene Christian University" in 1982 and "Manual for Badminton Teachers at Abilene Christian University" in 1985. Dr. Curtis has also authored one textbook, "Pickle-Ball for Player and Teacher" in 1999, as well as "Intermediate Bowling Notebook" in 1993.

Although physical education has been a passion for her entire life, Dr. Curtis spent years playing the clarinet, beginning in elementary school. She loved it so much that she almost studied music in college as opposed to physical education. Today, while enjoying retirement, she loves to garden and travel. Known for volunteering with a number of organizations in the past, including with the Hendrick Medical Center, the Hope Fund Committee, and the Vera West Women's Center, being actively involved in her community has always been very important to her.
