Mrs. DeKrey currently volunteers as an auxiliary member at Sanford Medical Center and works part-time at Book World. Additionally, she was elected secretary for the Sons of Norway, Lodge 500 (2016 and 2017), and serves as an election judge for local and national elections. Before her retirement in 2005, she most recently served as an eighth grade reading teacher at Horizon Middle School. Other titles she held were Chapter I reading teacher and student newspaper adviser at Moorhead Junior High School, English reading teacher for Rochester Public Schools, Chapter I reading teacher at Chief Bug-O-Nay-Ge-Shig School, second grade teacher at Rice Creek Elementary School in Fridley, Minnesota, and second grade teacher at Hayes Elementary School. She was also a substitute teacher in Bismarck, North Dakota, where she volunteered her time to community efforts as a den mother of the Club Scouts, helping refugees relocate to Bismark, and establishing a kindergarten in the Bismarck Public Schools. Mrs. DeKrey is remembered by generations of students as a warm, guiding educator and a generous community leader.
Mrs. DeKrey was born in Oakland, California, in 1944 to Lorentz Reginald and Hazel Dorothy Hegstad. She earned a BS in elementary education and German from Concordia College the same year she married, in 1966, and a Master's Degree from Bemidji State University in 1989. She is licensed to teach in the following educational areas: Elementary Classroom, Remedial Reading K-12, Developmental Reading K-12, Reading Consultant, German.
Mrs. DeKrey is affiliated with the National Education Association, the Minnesota Education Association, the International Reading Association, the Minnesota Reading Association, the Northland Reading Council, and Kappa Delta Pi. While working in the Moorhead district, she wrote practice tests and taught Saturday classes for students in preparation for passing the Minnesota Reading Standards Tests. Mrs. Dekrey was selected for inclusion in four volumes of Who's Who in America, five volumes of Who's Who in American Education, three volumes of Who's Who in American Women, and the 1996 to 1997 volume of Who's Who in the Midwest. She enjoys skiing, golf, music, art, and travel, as well as the company of her sons, who are her pride and joy. Christopher is looking to start his own business, Loren is a state trooper for Ohio and Peter is studying tax preparations for accounting.
