Dr West has been in academia since 1982, and is currently a full time tenured Professor and Program Chair in the Human Services Department, within the School of Public Service and Social Sciences at Quinsigamond Community College. She also serves as Lead Adjunct Faculty for the Human Services concentration in the Psychology Department of Bay Path University, and serves as Adjunct and Practicum Supervisor with the Continuing & Career Education Department at Assumption College. Dr. West served as Adjunct faculty at Northeastern University's School of Allied Health as her first academic affiliation. She earned a master's degree from Boston University Sargent College of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, followed by a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Psychiatric Rehabilitation and a role as adjunct faculty in the Psychology Department for many years. Dr West was the first Professor to present the "Last Lecture" by unanimous vote of The Undergraduate Psychology Association. Her students responded to her dedication by declaring her "a force of nature" on Rate My Professor, and she is noted as a "legend" and "the most gifted teacher I have known" by her peers.
Dr. West served as Associate Minister & Director of Pastoral Care at a church in Qunicy, Massachusetts before becoming a Chaplain. She was Director of Pastoral Care & Education at Quincy City Hospital and later Pastor at Overlook Lifespan Community in Charlton. Her home church is the First Congregational Church of Woodstock, Connecticut, and she enjoys her time doing supply preaching there.
Dr. West graduated with a PhD in Law, Policy & Society from Northeastern University. She won an Advanced Minority Fellowship as a Native American Scholar for her dissertation studies, which became an acclaimed work in bioethics. She received an MS from Boston University in 1980, a BS from the State University of New York of New Paltz in 1977 and an Associate of Science from Dutchess Community College in 1975. Dr. West also holds a Master of Divinity, a Bachelor of Arts in Sacred Literature, and Associate degree in Interfaith Biblical Studies from Logos Theological College. Her Doctorate in Religious Philosophy is being finalized. She felt strongly that her secular and theological degree should parallel her work experience, underscoring her belief that work and faith in union is foundational to social justice.
Dr. West was among the early advocates trained by Health Education & Welfare on The Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the foundation of the current Americans with Disabilities Act. Her work with the City of Boston's Department of Health and Hospitals created national prototype policy for reasonable accommodation and definition of undue hardship. She was later was named the first Commissioner of Handicap Affairs and 504 Compliance Officer for Boston, and worked with Senator Edward Kennedy to give the historic Faneuil Hall disability access.
As a social justice activist, Dr. West also served as Executive Director of Social Action Ministries, and was affiliated with the Massachusetts Housing & Shelter Alliance. She was mentored by Philip Mangano, nicknamed the nation's "homelessness czar", who went on to serve as the head of the U.S. Interagency Council on Homelessness. She also provided "street ministry" for those in the Boston Common area. Dr. West served as clinical supervisor for theological students at Harvard University and later as Senior Research Associate for the Harvard School of Public Health. Dr. West went on to work with the New England Family Study on familial schizophrenia. Dr. West was the co-author of "Coping+Plus: Dimensions of Disability".
