Born in Hallock, Minnesota, to Edgar R. and Hattie Veblen, Mr. Veblen was always interested in business, and followed it through a succession of industries. He attended the University of California, Santa Barbara, and earned a Bachelor's degree from the California Polytechnic State University before going on to a Master's degree from Oregon State University in 1955. Mr. Veblen started in commodities and devoted 20 years to Cargill, the noted America food and agriculture company, where he served and was elected a corporate vice president. Concurrently, he accepted an appointment as a White House fellow and special assistant to the secretary interior of Washington in 1965.
In 1975, Mr. Veblen accepted a position with SRI International as director of food and agriculture in Menlo Park, California. He went on to found Food Systems Associates Inc. in Washington in 1980. Mr. Veblen was elected president of the Washington chapter of CMC Institute Management Consultants, and as a director of Georgetown Consultant Incorporated. In addition to leading his businesses to success, Mr. Veblen has written a number of books on food, business, and life, collaborating with M. Nichols and M. Abel on national food system projects. Notably, he was selected by the administration of Lyndon B. Johnson for the 1965 White House Fellows Program, going on to serve as a director of the White House Fellows Association in 1985. Mr. Veblen was chair of the Freedom from Hunger Foundation in California, and served on the boards of the Patterson School in the University of Kentucky and the American Near East Refugee Aid group from 1994 to 2013.
Mr.Veblen is a member of the Cosmos Club, Friends of Montpelier, Hillsdale College President's Club, and convener for the Superior Business Firm Round Table. Mr. Veblen was selected for inclusion in numerous volumes of Who's Who in Finance and Business, Who's Who in Finance and Industry, Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the East, Who's Who in the Midwest, and Who's Who in the World. He is the husband of Linda Joyce Eaton and the father of Kari Kristen, Erik Rodli, Mark Andrew, Sara Catherine, and Kristen Kirby. Mr. Veblen enjoys travel, gardening, and writing.
