This year, an image of the International Space Station was captured as it crossed the solar eclipse, a sight that certainly was gratifying to Mr. Freas, who has worked as an engineer for the station's American support crew at Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) since 1999. As an accomplished Computer Science professional, Mr. Freas has been a consultant in Computer Science and Electronic Engineering since 1991, with his company, Freas Consulting, LLC (formerly Synergistic Consultants, Inc). His work at MSFC in recent years has been focused upon testing of Space Station payload experiments before they fly to the station. In this endeavor, he was acknowledged with a Boeing Meritorious Invention Award for the Remote Advanced Payload Test Rig in 2009.
The son of George Wilson and Audrey Carolyn Freas, Mr. Freas was born in Franklin, Kentucky, where he learned Computer Science at Western Kentucky University, earning a BS degree in 1979. Mr. Freas earned an MS in Computer Science at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. As his Master's thesis, Mr. Freas created the LALL parser generator that was later used in a Compiler Construction course he designed and taught. While consulting for Bell South Telecommunications in Birmingham, Mr. Freas became adjunct professor of Computer Science at American Sentinel University (formerly American Institute of Computer Science), where he taught Master's level Computer Science courses he designed.
Since joining Boeing at MSFC, Mr. Freas has contributed in valuable ways to the field of Aerospace. In 2008, he worked on the ARES 1 instrument unit avionics by performing a trade study to select the Embedded Operating System to be used to control the rocket while in flight. He was selected as a member of the American Astronautical Society International Space Station Utilization Technical Committee in 2012, and has served as Technical Session Chair for various breakout sessions at the International Space Station Research and Development Conference. Mr. Freas' contributions to the field of Aerospace include two patent applications filed by Boeing for the Multifunction Programmable Foodstuff Preparation device that can be used to prepare food in deep space or on the ground, or in wide body airplanes.
In recognition of his accomplishments in computer science, Mr. Freas was selected in numerous volumes of Marquis Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, and Who's Who in the World. He is currently designing and building a lake house, and is the father of Alexander Moragne Freas.
